ByJanieHar The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO The San Francisco Zoo celebrated the 45th birthday of the oldest black rhinoceros in North America with a spe- cial cake of rolled oats and molasses. The exact date of Elly's birth isn't known, as she was born in the wild. But she has lived at the zoo since April 1974. Zookeepers on Friday prepared a "sweet feed" of oats and molasses that read "45," said zoo spokes- woman Nancy Hayden Crowley. Elly has given birth to 14 calves, helping pre- serve a critically endan- gered species that num- bered 200,000 before 1960 throughout parts of Africa. The number has dwindled to 3,000 to 5,000, due to poaching for their horns, said zoo cura- tor Jim Nappi. The horns are prized in some cultures for folk med- icine cures and use as deco- rative dagger handles. The second-oldest black rhino in North America, if still alive, is about 38 years old and lives in Miami. There are about 60 black rhinos in North America zoos. In the wild, black rhinos eat bushes and shrubs. At the zoo, they are fed alfalfa and hay, fruit and acacia. Elly especially loves beets, corn and bananas. She weighs about 2,000 pounds and sleeps on an entire bale of straw to soothe her elderly bones. She shares a habitat with grandson Boone. "She's our little old lady that everyone pampers," Nappi said. "She likes to interact with food. She's got a kind of independence to her, which is unique." Black rhinos are ex- tremely nearsighted but have excellent hearing and sense of smell. Their life span in the wild is about 16 to 20 years. By Michelle Rindels The Associated Press CARSONCITY,NEV. The Ne- vada Supreme Court has or- dered a new trial for a man convicted of assassinating a Hells Angel leader in a 2011 shootout between rival mo- torcycle clubs at a Reno- area casino. The high court issued its ruling Thursday overturn- ing the conviction of Er- nesto Gonzalez, 57, saying the district court abused its discretion by not answering a jury question about a con- spiracy charge. Justices also said the lower court failed to split up decisions about guilt and whether Gonzalez should get a harsher penalty for gang involvement. "The cumulative effect of these errors deprived ap- pellant of his right to a fair trial," Justice Nancy Saitta wrote in the unanimous opinion. Gonzalez is an ex-presi- dent of the Vagos chapter in Nicaragua. He was con- victed in 2013 of first-de- gree murder and other felo- nies in the killing of Jeffrey "Jethro" Pettigrew, 51, who was known as the "godfa- ther" of the Hells Angels in San Jose, California. Pettigrew's mother called Gonzalez a coward for shooting her son in the back before Washoe Dis- trict Judge Connie Stein- heimer sentenced the San Francisco man to life with the possibility of parole af- ter 20 years. But the judge added a gang enhancement to the penalty, so Gonzalez was unlikely to get out of prison until he was at least 83. Gonzalez claimed he was acting in self-de- fense and defense of oth- ers after a brawl broke out on a crowded casino floor in Sparks in Septem- ber 2011. He said he fired his gun because Pettigrew and another Hells Angel were kicking a fellow Va- gos member so hard in the head he thought they would kill him. 2011 SHOOTOUT Nevada high court orders new trial in biker killing Washington 46/31 New York 41/33 Miami 83/70 Atlanta 51/35 Detroit 33/26 Houston 53/41 Chicago 29/20 Minneapolis 29/19 Kansas City 37/17 El Paso 50/32 Denver 41/21 Billings 35/17 Los Angeles 66/4 5 San Francisco 54/44 Seattle 38/29 AIRQUALITYFORECAST Whatitmeans:0-50:Good; 51-100:Moderate; 101-150:Unhealthyforsensitivepeople; 151+:Unhealthyforall.
