Adams The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners elected Marshall Faircloth as their new chairman Dec. 7. Faircloth, who served as vice chairman this year, accepted the chairman's seat from outgoing 2015 chairman Kenneth Edge. Commissioner Glenn Adams was unanimously elected to serve as vice chairman for 2016. North Carolina Rep. Billy Richardson, on behalf of Gov. Pat McCrory, presented Edge with the Order of the Longleaf Pine during the meeting. "Your life is a playbook on how to build a consensus and be a part of something bigger than yourself," Richardson said. "Yours is a career marked by a commission that worked together, rather than divided, under your leadership." Edge was first elected to the Board of Commissioners in 2000 and has been elected every four years since. Edge announced at the Dec. 7 meeting he would not see re-election for the end of his current term, which ends in 2016. "I want to sincerely thank the citizens of Cumberland County for electing me to serve 16 years as a Cumberland County commissioner and six years as a Cumberland County School Board member," Edge said. "Serving has been an honor and a privilege. The rewards have been much greater than the challenges." To his fellow board members, Edge said, "Serving with all of you who will continue as commissioners and others on previous boards will always have a special place in my heart. I thank you for your tutelage, your patience, your kindness and the memories that we share." A retired educator, Edge served on the Cumberland County Board of Education from 1994-2000 and was its chairman in 1996. Edge was elected president of the N.C. Association of County Commissioners in 2011. Edge also thanked his family for their support during his years of service as an elected official.
