He really does, even if he's asked the same questions again and again. And when the San Francisco Giants catcher takes a day off — even a sched- uled one such as Monday against Col- orado — he realizes there's bound to be more scrutiny. Everything's fine with the leg, right? No setbacks with the ankle, cor- rect? That's simply the way it's going to be all season long if Posey sits out, plays first base instead of catch or is replaced late in a contest. But the leg is indeed doing just fine. 110 100 Sports Anglers wrap season 1B Wednesday April 11, 2012 Mavs get win over Kings Nowitzki and Rodrigue Beaubouis each had 15 points to lead six Dallas players in double figures, and the Mavericks beat the struggling Sacramento Kings 110-100 on Tues- day night before hitting the road. DALLAS (AP) — Dirk After a 12-3 run early in the second quarter that Beaubouis started with a three-point play, the Mav- ericks never trailed again. Sacramento tied the score a few minutes after that, but Beaubouis made two free throws to put them ahead to stay in a much- needed victory. Delonte West and Maybe even a little better than Posey anticipated at this point. Late last May, Posey was out for the year when he broke a bone in his left leg and tore three ankle ligaments on a horrific collision at the plate with the Marlins' Scott Cousins. So far this season, Posey has hardly given the leg a second thought. Well, besides a few more pregame stretches to loosen it up and icing the ankle after- ward, something he hardly ever used to do. ''I'm really happy with the way my ankle feels,'' said Posey, whose team has two more games against the Rock- ies before their home opener Friday against Pittsburgh. ''Everything is all go.'' Posey's hitting .333 through three games and launched a homer off Ari- zona's Josh Collmenter over the week- end. Still, there's one more test that's waiting out there for him: The close play at the plate. Posey got a small taste in spring training against the Texas Rangers dur- ing an exhibition game. In that March contest, Posey admitted that he might have stepped more away from the plate than in the past and put a swipe tag on Mitch Moreland that missed. Next time, in a game that really counts, there won't be any hesitation. There's simply no time to think about what might happen. ''When it comes down to it, you've got to let your instincts take over,'' Posey said. ''The main thing was to make sure I was prepared this spring with my positioning.'' Being without Posey last season certainly hurt the Giants. He was an important piece during their run to a World Series title in 2010, as much for his ability to handle the pitching staff as to produce clutch hits. Having him back in the lineup is a boon for aces Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain. To ensure the 2010 NL Rookie of Jason Terry each had 13 points, and Brendan Hay- wood 11 for Dallas. Shawn Marion had 10 points and 14 rebounds. The Mavericks (32- 26), who had lost three of their previous four games, are seventh in the Western Conference standings. They are a half-game behind sixth-place Hous- ton and only a half-game ahead of Denver. The Mavericks play six of their last eight games on the road, with a four- game trip in five days starting Thursday at Gold- en State. They play at home again next Wednes- day against the Rockets. DeMarcus Cousins had 25 points and 18 rebounds for Sacramento (19-39), which has lost five in a row and 10 of 12. Marcus Thornton, Isa- iah Thomas and Tyreke Evans each had 16 points for the Kings. Jimmer Fredette had 13. Surprisingly, it was the MCT file photo Buster Posey is back on track following last season's injury. see how he's doing,'' Bochy said. ''I don't know if we need to do that any- more. He feels fine. ''But we have a pretty good idea the Year doesn't wear down, Giants manager Bruce Bochy has a definitive plan in mind. Namely, days off whenever Posey needs them and the occasional start at first base to cut down on the constant rigors of catching. ''We check on him every game, to The Giants also have a reliable backup in Hector Sanchez, who has rapidly risen through the team's minor- league system to make his first Open- ing Day roster this season. Last year, Sanchez split time how we're going to run this. As we get into it, no days off for two weeks, let's say, he's going to mix in a game at first. He still needs a day off; that's not a day off.'' between Single-A San Jose and Triple- A Fresno, hitting a combined .285 with 12 homers and 84 RBIs. After a late call-up with San Francisco, Sanchez spent the winter honing his swing in the Venezuelan winter league, where he had the second-best average (.339) and finished fourth in RBIs (39). And Bochy won't hesitate to put Sanchez in the lineup. ''He can handle the bat. He showed that last year, both in Fresno and when we called him up,'' Bochy said. ''He has a good idea of what he's doing up there.'' Bochy is all about bringing along his younger players at a speed they can handle. He knows when hold back. ''We've got the season ahead of us,'' he said. ''I don't anybody putting too much pressure on themselves too early.'' first game the Mavericks won this season when Lamar Odom didn't play. Dallas was 0-7 in games Odom missed before Tuesday, a day after the team said they had parted ways with the NBA's reigning Sixth Man of the Year. His aver- ages of 6.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 20.5 min- utes in his underwhelming 50-game stint were career lows. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said the end came after a heated halftime exchange with Odom after the forward's uninspired four minutes at Memphis on Saturday night. ''I just asked him, does he want to go for it or not. Is he in or is he out? I think he thought we were playing poker. I just didn't get a commitment. And that was the end,'' Cuban said before the game against the Kings in his See KINGS, page 2B Acure for the Blues has eluded Sharks packets with rules are available at the Corning High School main office, by calling Mike Albee at 824-8046 or at corninghs.org/vballfundraiser. SAN JOSE (MCT) — The Sharks know that something has to change. The St. Louis Blues owned them during the regular season, winning all four games and outscoring San Jose 11-3. In two games in St. Louis, the NHL's stingiest defense kept the Sharks off the scoreboard alto- gether. So what does No. 7- seed San Jose need to do differently if it hopes to upset No. 2-seed St. Louis in their first-round Stan- ley Cup playoff series that opens Thursday at the Scottrade Center? "I can give you a long list of about 15 things that need to be better," coach Todd McLellan said after his team's practice Mon- day. And what's at the top of that list? "The understanding of how they play," McLellan said. "If we understand what their mindset is, how they play — and we do, we just have to accept it and then counter it — we'll be better off." More specifically? "Limited opportunities against, very few outnum- bered rushes "| very strong penalty kill, rely- ing on their goaltender," the Sharks coach said. "We have to play our game _ but play it under- standing what they're doing." What the Blues do, of course, is stick to their coach's game plan, and Ken Hitchcock has stifled NHL teams from behind a lot of benches over the years. San Jose, in fact, has had two postseason encounters with Hitch- cock with no success, as the Sharks were eliminat- ed by his Dallas Stars in 1998 and 2000. Hitchcock took over the Blues 13 games into this season and guided them to a 43-15-11 record by imposing a system that relies heavily on a strong forecheck to force other teams into making mis- takes. Goalies Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott, meanwhile, were stellar, allowing only 155 non- shootout goals all season, the fewest since the NHL went to an 82-game schedule. exciting hockey — in fact, San Jose's two losses at the Scottrade Center were It might not make for See SHARKS, page 2B
