ByJamesWilson FranklinGrahamre- ports, "For seven years after almost every foot- ball game, Coach Joe Kennedy of Bremerton High School in Washing- ton State had gone to the 50- yard line to bow his knee and pray. This sea- son the Bremerton School District ordered him not to do it anymore." Ken- nedy disregarded that or- der — and the propriety of obeying those in au- thority over him. Expect- ing to be escorted off the field by security he found a crowd of supporters — in- cluding the opposing team — joined him in prayer. The crowd erupted in ap- plause. Kennedy's contri- bution was to be the one with the courage to choose protocol over propriety. Propriety stems from the laws, policies and pro- cedures people promulgate to order their affairs. Pro- priety is good, but only as far as it supports protocol. The latter is about honor- ing God first and the peo- ple He loves second. Pro- tocol is always subject to the will of God, and our best bet for knowing it re- mains the Bible. While God never violates His own written Word, it is crucial to remember proto- col trumps propriety. It is just as crucial to know we discover the will of God in the whole of Scripture, not in some favorite text that says what we want to hear. For example, Coach Kennedy broke propri- ety wide open. He works for the school district and his bosses gave him a di- rect order, an order he de- fied. Yet the order was an offense against the First Amendment to our Consti- tution and a larger offense against His Creator and King. Protocol dictated his defiance; propriety is no excuse for abandoning His King. The adherents of pro- priety might have thrown a scripture like 1 Thessa- lonians 5:22 at Kennedy — Avoid even the appearance of evil — i. e. don't resist the orders of your superi- ors because it looks bad even if it is not. In other words, it is not enough to be right; one must look right for the sake of those who don't know bet- ter. This too is the Word of God, but it is not the whole Word of God. The whole Word contains pas- sages like John 7:24 — Stop judging by mere ap- pearances; Galatians 3:1-5 — Are you saved and wit- nessing miracles by the Law or by the Gospel you heard; and in the Old Tes- tament the example of Daniel, who prayed to the Lord his God after the King of Babylon forbade it because he was a man of protocol first. We can ei- ther be courageously the people God made us or we can try to be some- thing the world appreci- ates. But obedience to God always begins badly and ends well; obedience to the world begins well but ends poorly. This is the message of Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who refused to issue same sex marriage licenses because they vio- lated Kentucky law, the US Constitution, and the Word of God. It is the prophetic thrust of God's Not Dead, in which the student goes against his professor — not to find trouble but to walk in integrity. It is the rea- son I stood before a thou- sand people to protest the consecration of an apostate bishop — because God says safety is found by His side, not on the sidelines. Each of these people — the fictional and the real — ended well. Davis is a national celebrity, the movie is a hit, and I was invited to speak in other lands when my stand was picked up on the web and went viral. Vindication is not necessarily swift, but it is ultimately inevitable because the God who cre- ates protocol is authenti- cally God. Lake Burley Griffin is a dragon shaped lake in Canberra, named for the designer of Australia's cap- itol city. The lake is known for the occult activity com- mon to its shores as much as for being surrounded by Australian government buildings and installa- tions. The Governor Gen- eral's residence is located by that part of the lake called the Dragon's Mouth. When I led a prayer walk there in late September we did what we always do — we blessed, forgave, and celebrated the Lord's Sup- per on the land — for this is the protocol of redeem- ing the land itself. At the end of our time we poured anointing oil into the water. It imme- diately assumed the clear shape of a dragon — in- terestingly enough — and in about sixty seconds the oil had transformed its shape into that of a but- terfly. This is a prophetic promise of the redemption of land and people that al- ways follows a culture of protocol before propri- ety. We can await its ful- fillment not because of the sign, but because the God who creates protocol keeps His Word. GOD TALK Propriety versus protocol redux Wilson For the past several years the Guadalupian Organiza- tion of the Immaculate Con- ception Catholic Church, 818 Solano St. in Corning, has sponsored and organized a day of celebration to com- memorate the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Pa- tron Saint of Mexico. The day is filled with many colorful activities beginning with a proces- sion down Solano Street from Toomes Street to East Street. Included in the pro- cession are mariachi bands, beautiful horses and riders, men, women and children in their native dress, several floats bearing the statue of Our Lady, dancers in cos- tume who will perform na- tive dances in front of the church during the after- noon. Young men in costume will also perform, depict- ing historical events of the story of Guadalupe. Horses and riders will ex- hibit horsemanship dur- ing the afternoon, all after- noon music and bands will play, food will be offered, reflecting the culinary cul- tural heritage of Mexico in California. Community members, parishioners, Hispanic and non-Hispanic join in the procession, honoring Our Lady and accompanying her to the church where she will be celebrated at Mass. Flags, both of Mex- ico and the United States are proudly carried. This colorful proces- sion has gained in popu- larity and many come from the cities of neighboring counties as well as Tehama County to participate. This year the celebration of the Feast Day of Guadalupe will take place on Sunday, Dec. 13. For more information, call the church at 824-5879. IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Churchtocommemorate Our Lady of Guadalupe The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS The Dio- cese of Duluth, a sprawl- ing but sparsely populated Roman Catholic diocese in northeastern Minne- sota, filed an emergency petition for federal bank- ruptcy protection Monday after a jury found it par- tially responsible for mil- lions of dollars awarded in a clergy sex abuse case last month. The diocese said the move for Chapter 11 reorga- nization was necessary af- ter efforts to reach a resolu- tion with all abuse victims were unsuccessful. The dio- cese is the 15th U.S. diocese or religious order to seek bankruptcy protection in the face of sex abuse claims. "There is sadness in hav- ing to proceed in this fash- ion," the diocese's vicar gen- eral, the Rev. James Bisson- ette, said in a statement on the diocese's website. He said given the "magnitude of the verdict, the Diocese was left with no choice but to file for reorganization." In November, a Ramsey County jury awarded $8.1 million to a man who says he was molested by a priest in northern Minnesota more than 35 years ago when he was a boy. The di- ocese was held responsible for $4.8 million. Bissonette said the bank- ruptcy filing safeguards the diocese's limited assets while allowing the church's day-to-day operations to continue.
