Wedding or Reception meeting The mission of the Community Coalition for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse is to create a comprehensive and effective effort for the prevention of child sexual abuse in Cumberland County. The problem of child sexual abuse is complex and multifaceted. It is a community problem and therefore requires the involvement of the entire community to address. Child sexual abuse is largely unseen and unheard of because at least 73 percent of child victims do not tell anyone about the abuse for at least a year and 45 percent of victims do not tell for at least five years. Some never disclose. However, studies have shown that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men were sexually abused as a child. The cost, both human and economic, is high, but the solution of prevention is inexpensive and cost effective. One of the most proactive and pragmatic approaches to diminishing child sexual abuse is the education of responsible adults in the community in the use of common-sense prevention tools. The coalition is sponsored by the Child Advocacy Center. Representatives include individuals from law enforcement, schools, the Department of Social Services, the faith community, Fort Bragg Family Advocacy, Partnership for Children, child care providers, parents and other committed community leaders. Members are charged with creating training opportunities in the commu- nity by opening doors and driving the prevention initiative in all respects. The coalition's goal is to train 5 percent of the adults (11,820 individu- als) in Cumberland County by June 2016, using the Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children curriculum. Stewards of Children is a nationally rec- ognized program based on the belief that child safety is the responsibility of adults. Children are dependent upon adults to maintain and protect their sexual boundaries so that they can develop into adults free of the wounds caused by child sexual abuse. The program educates adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The focus of the pro- gram is on empowerment and action, so that adults can participate in creat- ing a world where all children grow up healthy and whole.
