StaffReports COTTONWOOD A young Red Bluff Spartans girls' basketball team began the 2015-16 season with a road loss to the West Val- ley Eagles on Thursday night 60-51. The Spartans led through the first two quarters 12-11 and then 30-26 before slowing down in the third and being shut down in the final frame 17-9. Freshman Jesse Miller was named player of the game for the Spartans, with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 turnovers, 2 assists and a block. Other team leaders were Ju- lia Brandt with 11 points, a turnover and an assist; Ally- son Drury with 10 points, 4 re- bounds, 4 assists and 4 turn- overs; Kylee Kitchell with 9 points, 6 rebounds and a turn- over and Maggie Winning with 7 points, a rebound, 2 assists and 2 turnovers. The Spartans are scheduled to face the 0-2 Las Plumas Thun- derbirds at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Las Plumas High School in Oroville. It will be a nonleague game. ROSEVILLE 54, CORNING 41 The Corning Cardinals girls basket- ball team lost Thursday evening to the Roseville Tigers 54-41. No stats were posted for the game as of midday Friday. With the loss the Cardinals are 1-1 on the season after a 66- 36 home win over Willows Tues- day night. Morgan Mason was named player of the game in the win, with 13 points. Other team leaders were Whitney Armstrong with 13 points, a rebound, 3 steals and 2 turnovers; Kaylee Shoemaker with 10 points, 2 rebounds and a turnover; Daisy Alston with 9 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals and Mariah Castle with 8 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 turn- overs. The Cardinals were sched- uled to face the 2-1 Eureka Log- gers on Friday evening at the Pleasant Valley tournament in Chico. LOSMOLINOS30,COREBUTTE25 The Los Molinos Bulldogs girls' basketball team opened the sea- son with a win Tuesday over CORE Butte 30-25 in a noncon- ference road game. Leaders for the Bulldogs in- cluded Rachel Rogers with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 7 steals and 4 turnovers; Michell Woolbert with 5 points, 11 re- bounds, 2 assists and a steal; Henna Acevedo-Mubarak with 5 points, 3 rebounds an assist and a steal and Heather Rodri- guez with 7 rebounds, an assist and 5 steals. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play the Greenville Indians at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Greenville. PORTOLA 35, MERCY 22 The Mercy Warriors girls' basket- ball team lost Thursday to the Portola Tigers 35-22 in a tour- nament game to open the sea- son. Team leaders included Chey- anne Johnson with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 8 turnovers; Madeline Flynn with 7 points, an assist, 5 steals and 3 turnovers and Laura Ke- ane with 11 rebounds, an assist, a steal and 4 turnovers. Staff Reports RED BLUFF With both Warrior teams advancing into the semi- final playoff games this season, Mercy High School celebrated its standout football and volley- ball athletes, as well as recog- nized individual swimmers, at a banquet Monday. Football Among the top athletes was Al House, who led the league in scoring and rushing yards with 194 points and 1,715 yards. He was third in the league in pass- ing yards with 494. House was sixth in the state in scoring and eighth in the state in total yards with 2,283. He also tied for third in the league for interceptions. Teddy Ranberg was second in the league in rushing yards with 1,594 and third in scoring with 126 points. Carlos Rosales topped the league with 1,631 kicking yards, ninth in the state, and Andrew Contreras was second in league with 1,479 kicking yards. Richie Borges led the league in extra points and was third in the state with 23. For field goals, he led the league and was fourth in the state. In punting, he led both the league and the state with 10 punts for 460 yards, a long of 60 yards and four punts inside the 20. Borges was second in the league in sacks, seventh in the state. Travis Gordon was sixth in sacks and Dartagnan King was ninth in sacks in the league. Gavin Parker was named most improved player and Tra- vis Gorden was named an all- conference player. Volleyball Madeline Flynn was among the league leaders in hitting per- centage at fourth with .171 and blocks, in fourth with 65. She was fifth in the league in kills, with 231. Tasha Pimentel was second in the league in assists with 565. She was named most valuable player and all-conference. Vanessa Arellano was named most improved player. Hailey Coelho was named JV most valuable player and Ta- tiana Addonizio JV most im- proved player. Swimming Anthony Aviles was named as most valuable player and All Conference. Mikaela Weber was named most valuable player. Emilia Gray and Marcus Kuchle were named most im- proved players. Busta scored 10 in Thursday's action and notched 6 rebounds a steal and 2 blocks. Other standouts Thursday were Hoag with 8 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 blocks and 3 turnovers; Marco Tapia with 7 points, 3 re- bounds and a block and Hayden with 6 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals, a block and 2 turnovers. The Cardinals, 1-1, were sched- uled to face Orland, 2-0, in the 48th Herb Jergentz Tournament on Friday night in Durham. WHEATLAND 62, RED BLUFF 60 The Red Bluff Spartans dropped a close game Thursday night against Wheatland, 62-60, and lost to West Valley Tuesday 70-59. No stats were posted for either game. The Spartans, 0-2, are sched- uled to face Fortuna at 9 p.m. Thursday in tournament play in Fortuna. MERCY 49, LOS MOLINOS 28 The Mercy Warriors shut out the Los Molinos Bulldogs in the first pe- riod Wednesday night to go up 19-0 before going on to a 49-28 road win in tournament play.
