Leaders of the several branches of the Christian Faith in the United States recently released a statement of identi- ty called the Manhattan Declaration. The inspiration of Charles Colson, the declaration's release follows the con- troversy over the Stupak Amendment (banning federal funding of abortion in the House passed Healthcare Reform Bill) and the revelation that Catholic Bishops united to let law- makers know they would only support healthcare reform if abortion were addressed in the way Congressman Stupak addressed it. Of course this declaration was under construction and negotiation with the leaders who came together to issue it for a long time, but the timing of the release cre- ates a crescendo of resurgent Christian input into the shaping of American culture in this season. It is a pro-active expression of Christian faith and iden- tity applied to the time and the place of our nation. The declaration addresses — in order — the sanctity of all human life, the fundamental nature and status of covenantal marriage as a lifelong union between a man and a woman, and the necessity of the free exercise of religious faith in a healthy society. It states that all human life is sacred in the context of Christian faith and the Jewish tradition from which it grew as unique in affirming all human life. Amongst the major religions only the Christian faith is absent any tradition of honor killing, as one example. Though not unique in condemning abortion (Islam and Judaism share the principle) Christianity is the first to speak not only for itself but to a world that was perfectly comfortable abort- ing or abandoning for death babies found inconvenient. And — while there are passionately pro-life human- ists and atheists today, no one serious- ly doubts the source of precepts and concepts respecting life in the Christ- ian intellectual depository. Yet the dec- laration notes life under increasing fire from increasingly secularized govern- ments as conscience clauses are stripped from regulations and professionals are threat- ened with loss of license if they refuse to perform proce- dures that violate their con- science. The signatories to the declaration promise they will neither cooperate nor comply with life-ending measures regardless of pres- sure or intimidation. The declaration calls mar- riage between a man a woman a fundamental build- ing block of a healthy society and an objective reality that literally shapes life. While acknowledging that promis- cuity, infidelity and divorce have been tolerated for too long in the Church, it pledges to stand for the covenant and against these wedges. It labels efforts to re-define marriage a symptom of the self-destructive pattern of rebellion against all accountability that goes back to the Garden of Eden; the sign- ers pledge to stand for marriage as they stand for life — because the two can- not be separated in any meaningful way. The know, although they don't mention it, that hundreds of studies supports their position of connecting healthy marriage to a healthy society as it is reflected in the health and mat- uration of that society's children. They refuse to be intimidated by those who would call them intolerant and — in some nations already — imprison them. They claim that the best way to love those who hold a different view is to tell them the truth. They make clear (without specific citations) that the free exercise of faith is the principal bulwark against tyran- nies of all kinds. It is a historical fact that every facet of freedom as we Americans understand it came from one or another Puritan sermon — from the separation of powers to the Bill of Rights. The very secular voices that rail against Christians operat- ing in the public square owe their right to raise their voices to these traditions. It is just as unquestionable that Christian ministries set the gold standard in both quantity and quality — not to mention efficiency — for compassionate care of the most vulnerable mem- bers of society. Whether we are talking about the Salvation Army, Rescue Missions, or Habitat for Humanity — not to men- tion the Carenet Pregnancy Centers of our region — the Body of Christ invented compassion as we know it. The Manhattan folks declare they will not be intimidated by those who would silence them. The Manhattan Declaration has more than 120,000 co-signers, includ- ing this author. It is a statement of identity, and it is unabashed in affirm- ing that identity in our time and for our culture. It is an obedient response to the challenge in 1 Peter 3:15 to be always ready — with gentleness — to answer questions about the faith from all comers. One can only say, "Amen."
