Saturday, March 24, 2012 – Daily News 7A Religion Faith&Worship Church news Spring Chorale Concert The Red Bluff Masterworks Chorale is inviting the community to share in the upcoming Spring Concert. Two identical concerts are being offered on Sunday, March 25. The first concert is at 3 p.m. in the chapel at the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina. The second pre- sentation will be at 7 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in downtown Red Bluff. The Red Bluff Masterworks Chorale is conducted by Mark Franklin and accompanied by pianist Darlene Lee. The pre-Easter week concert will feature the sacred cantata The Seven Last Words of Christ by Theodore Dubois. The Masterworks Chorale welcomes soloists Becky Snow, soprano, of Orland, Wesley Snow, bari- tone, of Orland, and Dennis Murray, tenor, of Red Bluff. This classic work will portray the final words of Jesus as before He was crucified. Other titles in the concert will be Chorale favorite To Love our God, a setting of the text from Ecclesiastes 1 and 12; God So Love the World, a setting of the text from Gospel of John 3:16 and 17; and the hymntune When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. The Red Bluff Masterworks Chorale is a volunteer choral ensemble committed to presenting larger choral works in the community. The non-auditioned Chorale rehearses weekly to prepare music for concerts throughout the year. The Red Bluff Masterworks Chorale and Orchestra will be presenting the Memorial Day Celebration Concert on Sunday, May 27. Tickets are not necessary for either concert. To become a member of the Chorale or become a financial supporter, contact Mark Franklin at 527-4203. Jews For Jesus to speak Pastor Pat Hurton invites all to hear a presentation of Jews for Jesus at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, at Sun- rise Bible Fellowship, 956 Jackson St. The topic will be The Jewish Roots of Pentecost. Jews for Jesus is an agency that proclaims that Jesus is the Messiah of Israel and Savior of the world. The late Moishe Rosen, a Jew who has believed in Jesus for over 35 years, founded the organization. However, Dr. Rosen was quick to point out that he did not "start" Jews for Jesus. "Jews for Jesus began about 2,000 years ago, around 32 A.D., give or take a year. Jesus' first disciples were Jewish, and there have been some Jewish people who have believed in him ever since." The organization has permanent branches in eight North American cities (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Toronto, New York City, Washington D.C., and Fort Lauderdale) as well as over 127 volun- teer chapters spanning some 41 states and five coun- tries. The group's international branches are headquar- tered in Johannesburg, London, Paris, Odessa, Moscow, Essen, Rio de Janeiro, Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk, and Tel Aviv. To the Jews for Jesus, believing in Jesus makes sense in light of the Jewish Bible and in light of their experi- ences as "believers". For those who argue that Chris- tianity contradicts the meaning of Judaism, the Jews for Jesus say there are answers, which their representative will be happy to discuss after the presentation. There will be no admission charge. For more infor- mation call Sunrise Bible Fellowship at 527-6818. Standing up to the bullies One of the most insidious aspects of the politically correct movement is that they arrogate to themselves the right to define words like "victim" and "bully." If those who are being victim- ized by bullies are to stand up for themselves – and for those who can- not – we must claim the right to speak standard English instead of being pushed into some sort of Orwellian NewSpeak. For example, when Barack Obama decreed that the Catholic Church must provide contra- ceptive and abortion services to its employees under Obama Care the cry went up that the Church was victimiz- ing women by denying them these services. Reality is that these services are legal under law and the Church was simply refusing to pay for them inasmuch as to do so violates its understanding of the Christian Faith. It was government that sought to bully the Church. The Church stood up to the bully and Obama backed off. Now he decrees that government will pay for these services and the Church gets a pass. But that means you and I pay for services that may violate our faith – Catholics are not the only ones who hold a faith-based opposition to the taking of innocent human life. And, while most Christians have no prob- lem with contraception, the law still compels taxpayer support of the morally repugnant abortion services. To top things off, the administration tries to make it all about contraception – this is a blatant lie – and it is absurd to ask taxpayers to pay billions for ser- vices people can choose to buy or not to buy in any case. Congress is now standing up to the bullies in the exec- utive branch – on both sides of the aisle. We saw the same dishonest re- defining going in the recent decision Rummage The women of the Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff will hold their semi-annual rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4 and 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, April 5. The sale will be held at the church, 838 Jefferson St. There are no hold over items so everything is new for this sale. Proceeds received will go toward by the Susan G. Komen Foundation to de-fund Planned Parenthood. Surely a privately owned and operated founda- tion can do as it wishes with its own funds – never mind the reason why. Yet the public outcry was so well orchestrated – they are bullying poor women again, who must have their abortions – that the Komen people backed down. Score one for the real bul- lies. Yet the good news is that more and more Amer- icans are awakening to the truth. Solid majorities now realize that the multi bil- lion dollar abortion indus- try will stop at virtually nothing to silence its critics – and we are becoming fed up with it. we would not exclude Alexander the Great from history texts because he was gay. He was a world shaper whatever we may think of his morals. But neither would we be forced to lionize – or whitewash – people for no other reason than that they are homosexual. James Wilson GodTalk Still to come – the awakening of Californians to the bullying of their children through such insidious law- making as SB 48. This law is so mili- tantly promoting the gay lifestyle – again under the cover of preventing bullying – that if the Old California robber Black Bart were found to be gay teachers would be ordered to refrain from identifying him as a crim- inal. The good news is that teachers – and parents – can stand up to the polit- ically correct bullies in the legislature and teachers' unions by signing the petition to place the CLASS Act on November's ballot. Children Learning Accurate Social Science will – if adopted – roll back SB 48 and other laws that substitute politically correct values for facts – and scream bloody murder if resisted – with a renewed commitment to share factual informa- tion and let human beings – even chil- dren and teens – learn how to process it for themselves. That would mean missions projects. For more information call the church at 527- 0372. Events First Presbyterian Church, 471 Marguerite Avenue, in Corning is holding the following events: • Easter Egg hunt and party, 10:30 a.m. Saturday March 31, 471 Marguerite Ave. Most people believe the Bible teaches that truth will set you free. Actually the Bible and its God goes much deeper. It teaches that only by hanging out with One who died and rose for us (John 8:32) are we capable of knowing the truth and thus going free. And it contends that He died to set all free – gay and straight alike. Jesus has nothing but love for homosexual people – Chris- tians and others take note – but He has little love for politically correct drivel. Now if only we might begin to minister in loving determination to those like the federal judge who recently overturned the assault con- viction from UC Berkeley in which a Muslim student rammed a Jewish stu- dent with a shopping cart. The judge ruled the ramming was a form of pro- tected free expression. Let us hope the judge has a come-to-Jesus moment in which he learns that expression is one thing and aggression another. Let us pray and work for many such moments that they be beacons of clar- ity and continuity. Here endeth the les- son. James A.
