4 www.texaspikes.com The Beta Mu Review a sophomore at Alabama. All three daughters became Chi Omegas at Alabama. David and Jana's son, Trey, is now a senior at La Jolla High School in La Jolla, California. Professionally, David is president and CEO of Althea Inc. (www.altheacmo.com), a biologics drug manufacturer in San Diego, California. "I started my career in public accounting, then joined a large energy services firm in order to get direct operational management responsibilities as well as international work experience. Ten years after graduating, I helped start a biotechnology company, serving as COO for 14 years. This led to founding a new company in Houston focused on manufacturing biologic drugs for multiple biopharma companies. We sold this company in 2010 to a large Swiss biopharma manufacturing company, where I remained for three years before moving to San Diego to become Althea's CEO in January 2014." David continues, "The pharmaceutical sector is an incredible field and it's a privilege to be part of developing new medicines to address multiple diseases in ways only imaginable a few years ago." David recalls important learnings from his Pike days. "Seeing our brothers' dedication to what was best for the overall organization—even if it wasn't the most popular decision for everyone— is something I have to think of all the time both professionally and with my family. I remember passionate discussions at the Pike house about the right thing to do in terms of certain situations individual brothers, or the fraternity as a whole, were facing. People's willingness to put themselves out there with their opinions was something I had never experienced. I'm very proud to have been part of the Pi Kappa Alpha family for this reason." Throughout the past 25 years and several international moves for David and his family, he has stayed in touch with Pikes such as Chris Bentley '82. "Chris is now a brigadier general in the U.S. Army serving in the NATO-led Afghanistan theatre, whom I've seen from time to time over the years, including when he was stationed in Hawaii and D.C. Our daughters are now friends at the University of Alabama. I also have maintained close friendships with Steve Winter '82, Bill Lakenmacher '82, Tom Breedlove '82 and Rick Jackson '83. One of the first guys to contact me when we moved out to Southern California last year was Chris Bull '82, and I'm in touch with Doug Perkins '81 as well. These Pike friendships endure and mean so much to us all." Steve Winter '82 recalls, "David has been a great friend from the day he pledged Pike. We had a great time in school, and until his recent move to San Diego, we would see each other on a weekly basis at our breakfast club in Houston. David and Jana are a great couple and have raised a terrific family. One thing that is for certain, no matter how far his career or business takes him, David and Jana will always remain close friends that started over 20 years ago at 2400 Leon." David visits college campuses through his work and is impressed with the students he meets. "There are so many resources available to them that either didn't exist or I wasn't aware of when I was in school. My advice to each active Pike is this: in between all the fun and games that college affords you, carve out some time to avail yourself of the resources that are there for you. Don't be afraid to ask a Pike alum who is in a field that you're curious about to spend some time with you. Many alumni are willing to invest time to help you think through some real dynamics that you might not have had the chance to consider." David believes the real learning process begins when you walk off campus with your degree. "Be curious, take some risks with your career, and put yourself in uncomfortable positions at work to make sure you are being challenged and stretched!"
