I have cov- ered it in print and on the air for several years and am always awestruck at the simple majesty that unfolds in this process of Christians praying peacefully in front of abor- tion providing facilities. They only speak when spoken to and they pray for all who are impacted by abor- tion. They ask God's blessing in the knowledge that those He blesses He also transforms into the humanity to which we are called. The last sea- son saw sixteen hundred cam- paigns. By the grace of God more than five thousand pre-born lives were saved, sixty-plus workers quit their jobs, and nineteen clinics closed temporarily or permanently. Parents traded desperation for liber- ation. The first 2012 season began Ash Wednesday – Feb. 22 – and Redding based volunteers pray at the facility at Victor and Mistletoe through April 1. Seasons like Forty Days for Life and ministries like Carenet and LifeLight account for the current 58% majority opinion in America that ending life is no way to enhance life. Even larger majorities – up to 80% -- of those polled oppose the use of taxes to fund abortion and the power of law to coerce employers into paying for abortions. The tide is not turning because of skilled debate or in- your-face picketing, but because of growing numbers of compassionate people willing to come alongside the desperate women who seek to end a crisis pregnancy and to gently confront (without judging) the men who so often pressure them into it. Abortions are down across the gen- erational board nationally by more than 30%, and by 40% in the younger generation. Any readers who would like to volunteer may go to vigilcalendar.com/redding and commit to pray during whatever time they would like – in hourly increments. Organizer Josh Watkins assures me that those who cannot pray on-site are welcome to pray at home. The vigil is conducted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day through Palm Sunday, April 1. Although the Roman Catholic Church has been in the forefront of the pro-life movement for decades, this is anything but a sectarian cause. More and more evangelicals – and people of no denominational label at all – are stepping up to the plate. The goal of the movement is nothing short of the restoration of a culture of life in these United States. That will come about by God's intervention when we in His Church recognize and organize around our own need to repent – to turn away from the lives we create to face and embrace the life He has waiting for us. When we begin to live that victorious life no one will want to be left out of it – and not before. James Wilson GodTalk pation of that day on Saturday, Feb. 18. They held a sidewalk counseling training for volunteers from any- where in California at 9 a.m.; speakers from across the Christian spectrum addressed vol- unteers who came at 10, and the barbecue with games and face painting began at 11 a.m. There were 400 hot dogs to consume and potluck for the trimmings. They gathered at the abortion clinic at 1750 Wright St. in Sacramento for this Celebrate Life event. Everyone was welcome and for those in our region new to these activities it pro- vided a great chance to mix with the veterans of life. Again let me say there will be no This culture of life will feature the restoration of ravaged families, liberation from addiction and abuse, and the re-sensitizing of the culture to compassion for all. It has always been so during a Great Awakening – and God will settle for nothing less from His people in this time. Jesus said, "I came that they might have life and have it to the full," in John 10:10, and He is not one to be blowing smoke. The Sacramento chapter of Forty Days for Life celebrated in antici- aggressive aspects to Forty Days for Life; there never is. Deliberate- ly held in the traditional season of Lent, it is a time to sacrifice agen- das. The power of this ministry is in the grace and humility displayed by the volunteers, and their willing- ness to engage in prayerful dia- logue with those who have every- thing from questions to passionate disagreement. This is what sepa- rates them from the purveyors of the culture of death – whether death by abortion or the heart death that comes from every decision to care for "me" first. It is what iden- tifies them as servants of the God of life. James A. Call George 530-736-4800 St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 510 Jefferson St., in Red Bluff is sponsoring the Buy a Brick Cam- paign until Sunday, April 1, as part of a national, grass-roots appeal to help rebuild Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. According to campaign coordinator Jean Patton, the Episcopal Church in Haiti supported more than 200 schools, medical clinics, a music school and a symphony orchestra before nearly all these proper- ties were destroyed in the earthquake of January 2010. "By rebuilding the church, we are rebuilding the communities which the church serves," Patton said. "People talk about 'Hope for Haiti.' We are build- ing hope a home base." St. Peter's has committed to selling 50 bricks for $10 each as part of a larger, diocesan-wide goal. This fundraising event is open to the public and donations are tax deductible. The Episcopal Church welcomes all who wor- ship Jesus Christ in 109 dioceses and three region- al areas in 16 nations. The Episcopal Church is a member province of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
