Red Bluff went on to take the second set and put Par- adise in a huge hole down two-sets-to-none. The Bob- cats battled back to take sets three and four with superior defense. Lorissa Parks, a sophomore libero and one of the state lead- ers in digs, consistently hit the floor in the back row all night. Leading by four in set three, Parks picked up an offspeed shot in front of the 10-foot line on the right side to keep it alive for ju- nior middle Serena Riddle's eventual put-away, pushing it to 14-9. Paradise's rally came to an end with a 15-9 loss in the fifth and final set. Emilee Heinke led Para- dise with nine kills, Mariah Mundt contributed seven and Riddle and Carly Otten each floored six in defeat. Spartans FROM PAGE 1 "We will work on areas to improve and battle against Central Valley." Standouts for the Cardi- nals included Mariah Cas- tle with 11 kills, three aces, two blocks and 11 digs; Kaylee Shoemaker with 11 kills, five blocks and 19 digs; Daisy Alston with two kills, two aces and eight blocks; Brenna John- son with two kills, three blocks and 19 assists and Gillian Wunsch with eight assists. The Cardinals, 9-15, face Central Valley, 2-15, at 6:30 tonight in Shasta Lake. Roundup FROM PAGE 1 mark the first time they will face off against each other as opponents. The last time the teams met, the Ravens beat the 49ers, 34-31, to win the 2013 Su- per Bowl and Boldin, along with 49ers receiver Torrey Smith, was on the winning side. "That was a special moment for everyone in- volved," Boldin said. "To be on the winning side is cool. What I remember is look- ing around and seeing all the flashes from the cam- era on the opening kickoff. You see it on TV but it's more impressive in per- son." This time, both teams are struggling, each at 1-4. "It's just another game," Boldin said Wednesday. "I don't feel any different." Boldin, in his 13th year in the NFL, understands he needs to approach the game the same way he approaches every game, though that won't stop him from saying hello, or thinking about the Ravens in general. "It's going to be weird to see them," Boldin said. "I know how they approach games. I loved my time there and they will always be a part of my life. But I'm excited about being here." Jimmy Smith, in par- ticular, knows Boldin and how he thinks. "We coached each other up," Boldin said. "I know what he hates and he knows what I hate. We had open communication about that." Boldin said communi- cation among the receiv- ers and quarterback Co- lin Kaepernick was a big reason the 49ers offense got untracked, scoring a season-high 27 points last Sunday in a loss to the New York Giants. They had scored a combined 28 in their previous three games. "We spent a lot of time together and it showed," Boldin said. "Kap put us in some great situations with his checks. He responded well." Kaepernick said added meetings improved team chemistryandhelpeddefine what certain plays were de- signed to accomplish. "We went into detail over things to make sure everybody was on the right page and what we were try- ing to take advantage of," Kaepernick said. "The big- gest improvement was just chemistry; being able to let balls go and trust our re- ceivers to make the play. It was a confidence-building thing on all sides: the re- ceivers, us and the offen- sive linemen." NOTES: LB Ahmad Brooks continues to deal with family matters and is away from the team. ... LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) was given the day off, OL Alex Boone (ankle, shoul- der) and OL Joe Staley (leg) were limited and RB Reg- gie Bush (calf) took part in conditioning. ... C Brian Folkerts and WR Andrew Turzilli were signed to the practice squad on Tuesday. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 BILL KOSTROUN — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Anquan Boldin (81) scores a touchdown as New York Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara (20) defends during the third quarter Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J. With Greinke and de- Grom squaring off again, Kershaw says the series is "dead-even." "As good as Zack is and has been the whole year, deGrom has been the same, so there's really no home- field advantage when you're facing a guy like de- Grom," he said. "We saw that in Game 1. He's just very impressive, just very tough to square up. If you can get strike outs on heat- ers like he can, it's really tough." Greinke has pitched at least six innings in all 33 of his starts with a 1.66 ERA that led the majors. As one of two right-handers on the Dodgers' postseason ros- ter, he has allowed two or fewer runs 27 times. He came up big in the only other elimination game of his career, win- ning Game 5 of the 2013 NLCS against St. Louis, which led the series 3-1. Greinke allowed two runs in seven innings to force a sixth game, which Kershaw started and lost 9-0 to end the season. "He'll paint the corners. He'll keep the ball down," said Mets rookie left fielder Michael Conforto, who will start against Greinke. "If he throws that fastball down at the knees we'll have to make him do that over and over again. But if he elevates, be aggressive with that and hit the ball hard somewhere and just try to keep him in the mid- dle of the plate." Greinke is facing the Mets for the second time in five days, only now the Dodgers' season is on the line for the second straight game. "It seems like in my ex- perience usually you have one good game and one bad game," he said by phone Wednesday. "But the better you pitch, the better your chances are. So my plan is just to pitch as good as possible and hope- fully it works out." Mattingly said catcher Yasmani Grandal is 50-50 to play Thursday because of his left shoulder that he tweaked in Game 3. He said the issue is whether Grandal can swing with- out pain; catching would not bother him. If Grandal can't go, A.J. Ellis would start. Greinke said he's pitched equally well with either one behind the plate. The Mets have outscored the Dodgers 19-16 in the first four games, including a 13-7 win in Game 3. Tak- ing out that anomaly, the other three games were de- cided by three runs or less. DeGrom struck out a postseason franchise-re- cord 13 over seven scoreless innings in his victorious playoff debut against Ker- shaw last Friday at Dodger Stadium. Greinke allowed two runs — both solo hom- ers — and struck out eight over seven innings in win- ning the following night. Ellis calls it "a huge mountain to climb" against deGrom. "We got an amazing pitcher, too, in Zack and we get to play at home in front of our great fans," he said. "It's going to be a re- ally, really big battle for us, because Jacob showed us Game 1, just how talented and special he is." DeGrom proved unflap- pable in front of a partisan Dodgers crowd in Game 1, displaying the same calm under pressure as he did pitching a scoreless in- ning at the All-Star game in July.
