ByJeffLarson jlarson@paradisepost.com @jtlarson on Twitter PARADISE TheRedBluffHigh girls volleyball team is young on the outside but experienced at the setter position, which goes a long way to winning five-set league matches on the road. The Spartans, led by sopho- more firepower Kylee Kitchel and Logan Wheeler and setting phenomenon Katie Gallagher, held off a late Paradise rally and beat the Bobcats on the road, 26-24, 25-15, 17-25, 23-25, 15-9 Tuesday night in an East- ern Athletic-Sacramento River League match on the ridge. Gallagher, in her first season back from ACL/MCL surgery, collected a match-high 24 as- sists and three blocks to pace the Spartan attack. "(Katie) is amazing and by far the best setter I've ever coached," Red Bluff coach Kelli Mustaine said. "I'm honored to have the chance to do it, she's super coachable and has the most heart on the team." She's also super quick with her hands, consistently getting that outside set out ahead of the block to give Wheeler and Kitchel an advantage nearly ev- ery time. Kitchel tallied a match- high 11 kills while Wheeler, the younger sister of Red Bluff product and 2009 grad Jaklyn Wheeler, provided nine winners in the win. Red Bluff (8-11, 2-4 EA-SRL) next faces Chico on the road Tuesday, Oct. 20, while Par- adise (23-9, 2-4) gets the unenvi- able task of taking on the league and section's top-dog, Pleasant Valley at home Thursday. The Vikings (24-6, 6-0) stayed unbeaten in EA-SRL play with a three-set home victory over Foothill Tuesday night. The Bobcats will need to be stronger out of the gate Thurs- day if they want any chance of pulling off the upset against the mighty Viking attack, led by se- nior and future UCLA Bruin Lily Justine. John Parks' team committed seven attacking errors in the opening set with Red Bluff to get behind 20-14. Paradise then began to rally, winning 10 of the next 16 points to grab set point at 24-23. But Red Bluff held on, striking first blood, 26-24 as Kitchel led the way with three kills from Gallagher. The Spartans continued right along, building a quick 6-2 lead in set two and 23-14 advantage when Kitchel powered home a nicely-executed tandem play PREP VOLLEYBALL SpartanstakedownBobcats RedBluffledbyKitchel'smatch-high11kills, Wheeler's 9 kills and Gallagher's 24 assists REDBLUFF3,PARADISE2 Up next:RedBluffatChico,7p.m. Tuesday. Now their other one gets a chance to extend the playoffs in a winner-take-all Game 5. Coming off Clayton Kershaw's stellar outing that tied the NL Division Series 2-2, Zack Gre- inke takes the mound on Thurs- day night against Jacob deGrom of the Mets. DeGrom, the Game 1 winner over Kershaw, will pitch on full rest, just like Game 2 winner Gre- inke. The Dodgers are trying to ad- vance to the NL Championship Series for the first time in two years. The Mets are seeking their first playoff series win since 2006, also the last time they were in the postseason. The winner takes on the Chi- cago Cubs in the NLCS at home starting Saturday. Fittingly, the Dodgers' season could either be prolonged or end on back-to-back appearances by Kershaw and Greinke, whose arms propelled them to a third consecutive NL West title and a franchise-record third straight playoff appearance. "They've given us two guys that stop streaks, save your bull- pen, are just day-in, day-out con- sistent guys," manager Don Mat- tingly said by phone Wednesday when both teams traveled back to Los Angeles. "You can really count on what you're going to get from them 90-something percent of the time."
