Tau Tales 4 M any sisters have given back to Alpha Delta Pi through the Continuing Our Tradition, Securing Our Legacy campaign, but Julie Black Wellner '78 gave back to her beloved Tau Chapter in a unique way—through her architectural skills. Approached by Cheri Clatterbuck '79 to provide feedback on renovating the chapter house's staircase, Julie helped assemble the necessary drawings for the house corporation board to receive a bid. She combed through photos and existing house plans provided by the board, creating her own drawings and eventually helping the board secure the bid they needed to start construction in May. Julie has also provided site planning and facade ideas for the exterior, which hopefully can be implemented into a future renovation project. "I am hoping the excitement generated by both the kitchen project and the recent interior projects accomplished this summer will motivate the alumnae to continue supporting additional house improvements," Julie said. In order to do large renovations to the chapter, a great deal of alumnae support is needed, but there are many different ways to contribute. "I hope that alumnae of all ages will get involved with hands-on opportunities like filling a board position, or by contributing skills like accounting, interior design, architecture, landscaping, etc.," Julie said. Of course finances are an essential part of a project, and Julie points out, "A little bit from a lot of people will add up, and hopefully if the building exterior improvements move forward, everyone will pitch in." Since 1987, Julie has owned her own architectural firm, Wellner Architects Inc., in Kansas City and has watched it grow and become the 25th largest firm in the area. She has always had the support of her ADP sisters, not only as an undergraduate but in her career. "I sincerely believe the support group I inherited as an ADP gave me the confidence to start and finish everything from powering through a tough semester to finding a summer job to starting a career in a field that was in a recession when I graduated," Julie said. Julie and her husband of 30 years, Dennis, have two grown children. Emily is 25 and an architect like her mother, and Jack is 22 and currently in dental school. Taking care of her family is important to Julie, but when not doing so she enjoys attending all sorts of sporting events in Kansas City with her husband. You can contact her at jwellner@wellner.com. Drafting a Fresh Face for Tau Architect Julie Black Wellner '78 Volunteers Her Skills for the Renovation "I was practically raised at the Alpha Delta Pi house," Alice Ann Sellers Ochs '49 said, remembering the years before she became a member of Tau Chapter. Prior to stepping foot on campus as a college freshman, she was already familiar with Alpha Delta Pi through her mother, Iris Russell Sellers '17, and sister, Iris Bobette Sellers Perry '44. She tried to keep an open mind as she went through recruitment, always knowing how much it would mean to her mother if she, too, chose ADP. In the end, no other sorority could compare to Alpha Delta Pi. To commemorate all that Alpha Delta Pi has meant to Alice Ann's family, she chose to join the Continuing our Tradition, Securing Our Legacy campaign, making a donation in memory of her mother, sister, and sister-in-law, Dolores Mausolf Ochs '49. Her mother had been a well-known figure in Tau Chapter, and Alice wanted to honor her family as well as aid the chapter. She encourages other alumnae to give back and bring their talents to ADP saying, "Good equals good." In her undergraduate years, Alice Ann learned much from Tau Chapter. She had already learned many of the sorority's principles growing up, but once she was in the chapter she began to experience everything for herself. "It is a little more organized, disciplined way of life," Alice said. She found being in a place surrounded by like- minded women to be powerful. "It's good to teach women they have a big say in their lives, community, and nation," Alice said. After graduating with her degree in physical therapy, Alice Ann has lived everywhere from Kansas to New York to Colorado, where she has retired. However large the distance from Tau Chapter, nothing could separate her from the sisterhood of Alpha Delta Pi. Everywhere she has lived she has found an Alpha Delta Pi group. "I think it has given me a sense of belonging wherever I am," Alice said. Living in Colorado, she has even had the fortune of meeting current undergraduates. Alice Ann remains close to members of her pledge class, Lois Lacy Replogle '49 and Rayma Hotchkiss Griffith '49, keeping the fond memories of her time in the chapter alive. Alice Ann and her husband, Harlan, whom she met at KU, have enjoyed living in Colorado Springs, Colo., for 58 years. They have two children, Cathy and Charles. She has been very active volunteering and supporting many organizations throughout the community for many years. However, her main interest for the last 25 years has been her sculpting, producing art work in bronze, marble, and other stones. She has enjoyed creating public art bronzes through commissions and gallery sales. You can contact Alice Ann at theochs@att.net. A Legacy All Her Own Alice Ann Sellers Ochs '49 Donates in Honor of her Family A s ADP welcomes their new sisters, they also welcome their new house director, Lisa Richardson. She may be new to Tau Chapter, but she is extremely enthusiastic about her new position and getting to know the members. "When I heard the job description, it seemed like a perfect fit," Lisa said, "I love college students and I enjoy administration, so I was excited about the opportunity." Prior to accepting the position of house director, Lisa taught elementary and middle school, was a vice principal, a children's church director, and had her own interior design business. She attended Kansas State University for her undergraduate degree, Introducing Mom Lisa Alpha Delta Pi Gets a New House Director
