Exhibit continued Coast Guard, WAVES were the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service in the Navy, WASPS were Women's Air Force Service Pilots, WAACS served in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, which later in the war became the WAC or Women's Army Corps, and women served in the Marine Corps Women's Reserve. Also detailed in the exhibit is how more than 2 million women took jobs in defense industries, making airplane parts, parachutes, gas masks, and more. Taking on the blue collar jobs of men, "Rosie the Riveter" became the icon for these women, who worked long hours in factories and then went home to take care of their families. The American Red Cross began their war effort work prior to Pearl Harbor; their volunteers and staff worked at home and abroad and nearly every family in America had a member who served as a Red Cross volunteer, donated money or blood, or accepted Red Cross assistance in World War II.
