8A Daily News – Saturday, March 3, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith Should faith get very involved in politics? ENLIGHTENED QUALITIES Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery, Kansas City, Mo.: Most of our govern- ment leaders practice some form of religion. There- fore, if they have the leadership qualities and skills to serve our nation, it shouldn't matter what religion they practice, as long as they don't try to impose their reli- gious beliefs upon the decisions they make for their constituents. Nearly all religions encourage moral virtue, compassion and loving-kindness. What better way to lead politically than with these enlightened qualities? The danger comes when a political leader tries to impose the dogma of his or her religion through legis- lation. Also, we have seen recently how some reli- gions want to impose their doctrine on legislation. Religion can provide us with a moral and ethical framework from which to make decisions. Today we are a pluralistic nation practicing a variety of reli- gions. The strength of our country lies in its diversity. Our national great seal's motto is "E Pluribus Unum," which means "Out of many, one." So, rather than adhere strictly to a particular doc- trine or philosophy, I would propose instead that we adopt love, compassion and wisdom as our doctrine. I think the great American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox said it best: "So many gods, so many creeds, so many paths that wind and wind, while just the art of being kind is all the sad world needs." A NEED FOR ORDER The Rev. R.L. Baynham, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kan.: The assumption here is that everyone knows what politics means. Therefore, we move with an understanding that soci- ety needs to interact with such a mind that brings har- mony for all to survive. We are people bound by the need for order and collective systems like politics that can bring equality to all. Christians are a part of the politics. We are com- pelled to maintain a high moral standard. That standard will have great influence on those who are chosen to establish guides for healthy living and keep the digni- ty of the Constitution of the United States of America. Our Founding Fathers and our Constitution sought to keep church and state separate. They established amendments to clearly define the rights of each entity. Christians are to live in such a way that their presence would affect the spirit and attitude of the people of this nation. Christians are governed by the teachings of the Bible, to be honest, to be moral, to be true and to give generously to people in need. We are to so influence the world around us that those who lead will sense the obligation to bring to the chambers of politics com- mitments that boost society and help improve the practice of politics. We must become great examples of "good politics." Braveheart west coast Men are in deep trouble in the US according to Dr. Paul Crites, president of New Covenant University in Nashville, Tennessee. He cites studies showing that men now earn but forty per cent of college degrees – down from sixty per cent a half century ago – and that the age group spending the most daily time on video games is between eighteen and thirty-five. He believes these young men have already had their dreams beaten out of them by a culture that denigrates authentic manhood as inherently irresponsible and abusive, leaving these guys in a sort of corporate depression. Whether we share his interpretation or not, there can be little doubt of the conclusion – men are in trouble. There is even a social mythology in our politically correct culture that believes men are more likely to abuse women and children – or simply never grow up – in proportion to their pos- session of the male hormone, testos- terone. Studies actually show it is low levels of testosterone in men that are linked with negative masculine behav- ior. In simple terms, when testos- terone levels are boosted men become more like men and less like animals. One might extrapolate from this that the more men are taught to be manly the more responsible they tend to become. The Promisekeepers Move- ment banked on just this extrapolation and enjoyed wild success with men and women as they implemented it. Enter Dr. Drake Travis and John Eldredge. Eldredge broke upon the Christian scene little more than a decade ago with the publication of his book, Wild at Heart. In it, he depicts a masculine nature created by God to seek adven- ture and quest, provide for family, raise and mentor children, and to love and care for the weak and impover- Spaghetti dinner Our Lady's Guild of The Immaculate Conception Church in Corning is having its annual Spaghetti Din- ner from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, at the Corning Memorial Hall Veteran's Hall. Price: Adults $10; Chil- dren age 5-12 $5; Family tickets are available. Dessert and wine included in dinner. Raffle, cake wheel, door prizes. For information call 824-5834. New service time Grace Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff has a new worship time of 9 a.m. Sunday mornings at the Ante- lope School on Antelope Boulevard. For more informa- tion call Pastor David Stark at 227-3630. ished. He provided a faith-based alternative vision for nascient men's movements that celebrated beating drums in the woods and watching football as the essence of manhood. He writes, with his wife, Staci, books that celebrate women in corre- sponding ways. Eldredge says, in Waking the Dead, "There is a widespread belief among Christians that the heart is desperate- ly wicked – even after coming to Christ. It is a crippling belief. And it is untrue." Dr. Travis wrote his doctoral dissertation on the premise that authentic Christian men and mis- sionaries – walkers out of the Biblical Great Com- mission to go into all the world shar- ing the Gospel and raising up men and women defined by the good news – were not separable. His vision is now called Braveheart West Coast. It is an eighteen week (divided into three six week modules in which men will live, learn and explore together) training course in which participants spend mornings in a classroom learning the Scriptures, how to pray, how to effec- tively share their faith, and how to walk in the signs and wonders that so typify the current season of the Body of Christ. Afternoons will be spent white water rafting, exploring caves, and climbing mountains – putting hands and feet to what they have stud- ied in the mornings. Accredited by New Covenant University and advised by John Eldredge, Braveheart launches at its Etna campus on March 12. Graduates are eligible for an Asso- ciate of Arts degree and ready to min- ister on a mission field of their choice – from across the sea to across the street. James Wilson GodTalk Kickoff events are planned for the Holiday Inn, Redding, on Friday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m., and the Community Theatre, Yreka, on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 9 a.m. Tickets are available at $10 per person through the web site, BraveheartWest- Coast.org and at Holy Fam- ily Books in Redding (cor- ner of Churn Creek and Hartnell next to the Golden Lantern Restaurant) and Bibles, Books and More (Hilltop at Mistletoe). Refreshments will be served at the events and there will be door prizes ranging from tools to… Dr. Paul Crites will be the keynote speaker and I will speak ahead of him. We will be joined in Siskiyou County by Sheriff Jon Lopes and in Shasta County by Sheriff Tom Bosenko on the speakers platform. Worship will be led by Louis Cronower at both events. I am proud to have joined the fac- ulty of Braveheart West Coast. I will be teaching the classes on Prayer, Healing, and Evangelism. Braveheart is not an occasion for men to pound their chests and grunt. It is an oppor- tunity for men to authenticate, incor- porate and celebrate the reality of manhood as God creates and intends it. This is a good thing for men and women alike – and men and women are equally welcome on Jan. 27-28. I hope to see you there. James Wilson is an Anglican priest who has coordinated the regional ministry of PrayNorthState since 2001. Hear him Saturdays at 8 AM on Radio KBLF at AM 1490. CHURCH CLIPS Schools work to balance rights (AP) — Schools nationwide are working to balance gay and religious rights ever since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowed a law school to deny recognition to a Christian group that did not allow gay members. The decision in June 2010 backed a policy at Cali- fornia's Hastings College of the Law that denied the Christian Legal Society's attempts to win official recognition. Experts say the decision applies to public schools that have so-called all-comers policies, which require campus groups to open leadership to anyone. Experts say since the ruling, both public and private schools have reassessed policies. A handful of schools are con- sidering changes.
