Original 2/18, 2/25, 3/3, 3/10/12 CNS-2261883# DAILY NEWS (RED BLUFF) Published: February 18 & 25, 2012 & March 3 & 10, 2012 IMPORTANT ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER Este información muy importante sobre su agua potable. Tradúzcalo o hable con alguien que lo entienda bien. informe INFORMATION contiene The City of Red Bluff Public Wa- ter System Has Levels of Total Coliform Bacteria Above the Drinking Water Stand- ard The City of Red Bluff (CRB) water system recently violated a State of California Department of Pub- lic Health (CDPH) drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our custom- ers, you have a right to know what you should do, what hap- pened, and what we are doing to correct this situation. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. We took 23 sam- ples for coliform bacteria during January 2012. Four (4) of those samples showed the presence of total coliform bacteria. The drinking water standard is that no more than 1 sample per month/5.0 percent of our sam- ples may do so. What should I do? "You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. "This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. Total coliform bacteria are generally not harmful themselves. Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environ- ment and are used as an indica- tor that other, potentially- harmful, bacteria may be pres- ent. Coliforms were found in more samples than allowed and this was a warning of potential problems. "Usually, total coliforms are a sign that there could be a prob- lem with the distribution system (pipes). Whenever we detect to- tal coliform bacteria in any sam- ple, we do follow-up testing to see if other bacteria of greater concern, such as fecal coliform or E. coli, are present. We did not find any of these bacteria in our testing. If we had, we would have notified you immediately. "People with severely compro- mised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at in- creased risk. These people should seek advice about drink- ing water from their health care providers. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of in- fection by microbes are availa- ble from U.S. EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1(800) 426-4791. "If you have other health issues concerning the consumption of this water, you may wish to con- sult your doctor. What happened? What is being done? The CRB in cooperation with the CDPH, believes it has corrected the source of the problem. The CRB has disinfected one well in the water system with the addi- tion of chlorine and has done some water system flushing. Coliform testing is ongoing. For more information, please contact the Public Works De- partment at (530) 527-2605 ex- tension 3067.
