CHIPTHOMPSON—DAILYNEWS Cameron Ortega carries the ball in the first quarter Friday against Anderson. ByChipThompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter RED BLUFF TheSpartansmoved the ball well early and led the An- derson Cubs in the second quar- ter 22-19, but once the Cubs' run- ning game got its footing Ander- son was off to the races. The Spartans took their second loss in a row Friday 57-29. The Cubs got the scoring started with a 44-yard comple- tion setting up a short run in for the score. The Spartans responded quickly when Wes Clawson con- nected with Lane Pritchard for a 16-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7. Anderson answered with a three-play drive for another score, but a bad snap cost them the ex- tra point — 13-7 Anderson with 5 minutes left in the first. Red Bluff struck back with a Joey Dagen run for a touchdown and Cameron Ortega picked up the 2-point conversion. Red Bluff up 15-13, still in the first. As time ran out in first, An- derson scored on a long run. The extra point was blocked leaving the first quarter score 19-15 An- derson. It looked like a shoot out in the making; both teams able to keep drives going and capitalize on big plays. Red Bluff slowed things down in the second, with a 5:30 drive for a Cameron Ortega score, and extra point, getting the Spartans back on top 22-19. Anderson would score twice more in the half, leaving the score 35-22 at halftime. After another Cubs' score two minutes into the second half, Clawson carried it in for a Spar- tans' score, and extra point, bring- ing Red Bluff back to within two touchdowns at 42-29, with 6:02 left in third. But the rest of the game was all Cubs, with two more scores and a goal line stand to take over at the Red Bluff 1 yard line. Coach Corey Hein said the team played well this week, but it can be tough for players to re- bound from back-to-back losses. "I am proud of you," Hein told his players following the game. "Your families are proud of you. Your town is proud of you." The Vikings made sure the Car- dinals would need several. Top-ranked PV methodically — if not spectacularly — bested Corning 38-7 Friday night at As- gard Yard as Brandt Hughes con- nected with Peyton Williams for two touchdowns, Jordan Cooley ran for 101 yards and defensive end Ryan McLain harassed the Cardinals for three sacks on a homecoming that the Vikings got to enjoy but perhaps not quite earn top marks. "I'd give us about a 'C' grade," coach Mark Cooley said. "A win's a win, we'll take it. By far not to our potential." Jamarquez Abrams' 73-yard kickoff return started the game, and three plays later Ethan Nash was in the end zone on a 6-yard TD run just 89 seconds into the first quarter. But the Cardinals, ranked fourth in the Northern Section Prep Football Media Poll but in Division III, a notch below PV in D-II, tied the game almost quickly. Corning's Alex Davila took a short pass from Wyatt Haydon, turned upfield and did the rest for a 71-yard TD with 8:56 left in the quarter. A standout running back, Da- vila was keyed on by the Vikings' defense all night on handoffs, as he was held to 22 yards on 11 car- ries. But the senior found room in the passing game as he man- aged 106 yards receiving on four catches. "They were just so tough up front, it was hard to run the foot- ball," Corning coach John Studer said. PV (3-0) kept going from there. The younger Cooley broke off a 68-yard run to the Cardinals' 6. That led to the first of two scores for Williams, who made a lunging, 6-yard catch of a Hughes pass in the front, right corner of the end zone.
