LAKE FOREST (AP) — Evangelical pastor Rick Warren appealed to parish- ioners at his Orange County megachurch Wednesday to help fill a $900,000 deficit by the first of the year. Warren made the appeal in a letter posted on the Sad- dleback Church Web site. It begins ''Dear Saddleback Family....'' ''With 10 percent of our church family out of work due to the recession, our expenses in caring for our community in 2009 rose dramatically while our income stagnated,'' the let- ter reads. Still, Warren said the church managed to stay within its budget, but ''the bottom dropped out'' when Christmas donations dropped. ''On the last week- end of 2009, our total offer- ings were less than half of what we normally receive — leaving us $900,000 in the red for the year,'' the let- ter reads. ''It's basically having to do more with less,'' church spokesman A. Larry Ross said. ''The seasonal Christ- mas offering was down sig- nificantly and, commensu- rately, the need for services the church is expected to provide is up,'' Ross said. Warren's appeal presents an opportunity for those who haven't been hit by the recession to step up and help, Ross said. The letter details some of the church's accomplish- ments in 2009 and where the donations would be used, including the church's food pantry, homeless min- istry, counseling and sup- port groups. It then lists three ways parishioners can make their donations. Warren was named the top newsmaker of the year by the Religion Newswrit- ers Association. He gained attention with his invocation at the inauguration of Presi- dent Barack Obama and comments in the aftermath of California's Proposition 8, which overturned gay marriage. Warren also gained attention for his work in Africa involving AIDS relief and other humanitarian activities. Still, this cramped little art studio in the middle of what, until not very long ago, was a street with as many broken dreams as it has potholes, is the closest thing to paradise Father Bill Moore has found. It's the place where the 60-year-old Catholic priest serves God by creating abstract paintings that he sells by the hundreds. No ordinary preacher, Father Bill, as he's known throughout Pomona's fledgling arts district, long ago dis- carded his clerical collar in favor of a painter's smock. Only on Sundays does he trade it for holy vestments to deliver Mass at a local church or one of several detention facilities for youthful offenders. All other times Moore is head of the Ministry of the Arts for the West Coast branch of his religious order, the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. His job is to serve God by painting whatever comes to mind. ''That's Bill's gift, his talent, and we have to support that,'' says Father Donal McCarthy, who is the order's West Coast provincial and Moore's superior. ''When you've got a creative person, you shouldn't stifle that cre- ativity.'' Leaders of the order, founded more than 200 years ago in France, know of no other member whose only mission has been to paint. But then Moore, a child of the '60s who can quote the words of Jim Morrison, Bruce Springsteen and Jesus Christ with equal facility, has been a barrier- breaker since he ignored his provincial's order his fresh- man year of college to study either philosophy or theolo- gy. He majored in art instead. ''The next year, a letter came from the provincial say- ing all the students are now encouraged to major in sub- jects of their choice. I thought that was very cool,'' Moore recalls with a smile as he sits in the lobby of his modest studio sipping coffee. A copy of underground comic- book artist R. Crumb's ''The Book of Genesis'' sits on the coffee table and works by Japanese artist Kazumi Tanaka (a personal favorite) are displayed here and there. Since early childhood, Moore says, he knew he had the calling — to be a painter. The call to be a priest came later. ''I was doing little abstract paintings when I was a lit- tle boy, like around 8, 9 years old,'' Moore recalls. ''My grandmother would just think they were the greatest things,'' he continues with a laugh. ''The rest of the members of my family, they were, ahh, kind of more like art critics.'' Not that the art world has been all that harsh on him. Moore's works, which are often compared to those of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, sell for more than $5,000 apiece, and he has been the subject of frequent shows at galleries throughout the Southwest. Any profits he makes from those shows go directly to his order. ''His work, as abstract as it is, has a definite spiritual quality to it,'' says Fenton Moore, who is curating a Moore exhibition that opened Dec. 24 at the Galerie Zuger in Santa Fe, N.M. ''It could be that it comes more from his heart than what you feel from other abstract artists. Or it could also be because he's just a very reli- gious person.'' Enduring strength Trials are part of our everyday life. 1 Peter 1:7 says that our trials will purify our faith. That reminds me of a blacksmith. The blacksmith patiently holds the gold over the fire. High heat is required to expose the alloys so the dross can be skimmed off. Sometimes our trial may feel like intense, unrelenting heat. 2 Corinthians 4:17 calls it, "light affliction." There is a crucial connection that the Lord showed me several years ago. Listen, it says, "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is work- ing for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen" (2 Cor. 4:17-18). Our central focus is a key to enduring strength. Hebrews 10:23 says, "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful." I am so grate- ful for the Lord's faithfulness. Do we confess His faithfulness during our trials, or are we confessing doubt, fear, and unbelief? What we confess with our mouth is what we really believe in our heart. Hebrews 10:36 says, "For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise." The Greek for endurance means to remain under. Where does enduring strength come from? My mind goes back to David. When he and his army returned to their home town called Ziglag, they discovered the enemy had captured their wives, children, and livestock, and set the city on fire. His angry and discour- aged army even talked of stoning David, but it says that David strengthened him- self in the Lord (1 Samuel 30:6). David anchored his soul through God's Word. Knowing how to encourage ourselves in the Lord is another key to enduring strength. Let's look at Abraham in Romans 4. God had promised Abraham a son. Twenty some years went by and no son. Here we glean some keys to endur- ing strength. "…he did not consider his own body being dead…" (vs. 19). "He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giv- ing glory to God." (vs. 20). "and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform" (vs. 21). Abraham did not allow the impossible circumstance to under- mine his faith. He did not dialogue with doubtful thoughts. His faith was steadfast because his focus was on God's faithfulness. We see another key in Hebrews 12:2, "Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Central focus on Jesus is essential for enduring strength. That takes us back to 2 Corinthians 4:18. We keep our eyes on the eternal rather than the temporal impossible circumstance we face. I often pray, "Oh, Lord, give me eyes to see beyond the obvious." James 1:2-8 gives us God's perspective for our trials. Trials are all about faith. Hebrews 11:6 says that without faith it is impossible to please God. He refines our faith to remove the dross and prove it genuine. When we fall into a new trial do we say, "Oh good, God is going to strengthen my faith."? Enduring strength is single-minded, pure, steadfast, and unwavering faith. J.
