It wasn't until he was pledging Delta Tau Delta that he realized the pin was a Delt pledge pin. His grandfather had pledged with Delta Tau Delta at Case Western University during World War II before he enlisted to become a combat pilot. When Kevin finally realized the significance of the pin while at Butler, he knew he was in the right place. "Never in a million years would I have expected that I would get the most out of my four year college experience in the house I shared with my brothers, rather than in the classroom." His Beta Zeta experience reinforced his values of brotherly love, support, camaraderie, and acceptance. The chapter helped Kevin gain confidence in himself and believe in his highest aspirations. With the support of his brothers, Kevin continued to pursue his dreams and became a professional speaker and comedian. For more than 30 years, he has addressed more than 3,000 audiences in 49 states and five countries, sharing empowering and hilarious stories to inspire people. "I encourage and invite people to live with authenticity, to choose to love. Choosing to love means looking out not only for ourselves and those close to us, but also looking out for people who are often left behind or forgotten." While Kevin has traveled all over the world to present his programs, his favorite place to speak is his home at Butler. Kevin cherishes opportunities to continue his support of and involvement with Beta Zeta. Like so many of his brothers who have felt nurtured by their Delt experience, he enjoys giving back to the chapter that gave him so many friends and memories—and he continues to make new memories with them today. When the Matt White Wing campaign started, Kevin was an instant and enthusiastic supporter. "When Matt's name became a part of it all, that was a game-changer. Yes, I would have, of course, supported the campaign regardless, and happily. But Matt stood by me—literally right next to me—as a pledge. I love hearing the stories first-hand from Matt and his wife, Shartrina, of the love that they feel from so many brothers… spanning all ages and decades." Kevin's book, Choose to Love, was recently published in a new hardcover edition. It is available at ChooseToLove.com. When you use the promo code betazeta, profits benefit the Matt White Foundation. When asked what he would like to say to other Delts across the country, Kevin expresses tremendous gratitude. "Thank you for all you meant to me as a young man, and all that you mean to me as an alumnus. Thank you for saying 'yes' to being a Delt. Thanks for what you do to better the lives of so many people who are affected by your service and philanthropy. Thank you for making me so proud to be a Beta Zeta Delt." Tomlin '91 saw that there was something different about Delta Tau Delta. The young men there knew who they were and what they wanted to accomplish. There was also a true sense of brotherhood in the chapter. His decision to join ended up being one of the best decisions of his college career. "My brothers in Beta Zeta gave me the confidence to know that I can accomplish whatever I set my mind to." His undergraduate years were filled with fun experiences and lessons learned. He remembers attending Butler basketball games, watching his brothers compete, and visiting the sororities every fall for the annual serenades. His favorite memories, however, were of work week at the beginning of each school year—a great time for fellowship without the responsibilities of academics. He also participated in the Delts Talking about Careers program, where he was paired with a local alumnus who was a plastic surgeon. Through this program, he was able to learn more about the medical field and prepare himself for his career as an anesthesiologist. Mike's experiences in Beta Zeta had such a positive impact that he wants to give back to future Beta Zeta Delts. That's part of the reason he chose to support the Matt White Wing. He also loved how the chapter was honoring Matt. "Matt has been an inspiration to everyone who knows him." Today, Mike is an anesthesiologist with Northside Anesthesia Services at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. His daughter, Connor, will be attending Auburn University in the fall and his son, Grey, will be a sophomore in high school. When he is not putting people at ease at work, Mike is traveling and enjoying live music around Carmel, Indiana. A Different College Experience Why Dr. Michael J. Tomlin '91 Values Beta Zeta Mike with fellow Delt brothers Nate Holdread '93, Ty Sibbitt '91, Scott Metzinger '92, Neal Stock '91, Dave Thomas '90, Mike Staton '91, Scott Johnston '91, and Wally Williams '91.
