page 3 sigma phi epsilon A s a graduate student attending Florida International University, Ruben King- Shaw Jr. '84 was alone, but when some undergraduates approached him about starting a Sigma Phi Epsilon Chapter, he was overwhelmed by their sincerity. "At a time when I was literally on my own, they offered me more than friendship. They provided a community. A pack. A family," Ruben says. His life hasn't been the same since joining— the brothers of Florida Nu have been a constant reminder that he wasn't alone anymore. He fondly recalls many memories with his brothers, but the naming ceremony is one in particular that stands out. Ruben laughs while telling the tale of taking the new initiates outside the city, building a bonfire, and presenting each brother with a nickname. After receiving two masters' degrees in health services administration and international business, he accepted a job as a securities broker and financial planner. He then worked his way up. Some career highlights include working with Governor Jeb Bush as his first secretary of the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, and later working with the George W. Bush Administration as senior advisor to the secretary of the U.S. Treasury. Additionally, he has advised the Obama Administration on key elements on his healthcare reform agenda. In his career and life, he has found three keys to success: be authentic, listen well, and find grounding. "Your brothers can provide great grounding when you need it, because some times should never be forgotten, and your brothers can make sure you never do. The fraternity was there with you before a whole lot of other things that are in your life today. If necessary, we will be there with you after," Ruben guides. His busy schedule makes it hard for him to participate in alumni functions, but he always takes advantage of the get-togethers when possible. From weddings—nearly all men who participated in his wedding were brothers of Florida Nu—to happy hours, it is always a special moment. "Life happens and it is hard to keep in touch along the way. But no matter how long it has been, drop a line every so often. Or post a message. Or send up a flare. Or show up at an event, even just for a moment," Ruben says. "Your brothers care about you." Ruben is currently the managing partner and chief investment officer at Mansa Capital, LLC. He and his wife, Patricia, live in Miami, Fla. They have two children, Angelica and Alexandra, who just graduated from Cornell this year. In his spare time, he enjoys collecting comic books and working out.
