JOHNBAZEMORE—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS San Francisco Giants right fielder Hunter Pence makes a catch to retire the Atlanta Braves' Eury Perez in the first inning Wednesday in Atlanta. ByGeorgeHenry TheAssociatedPress ATLANTA Madison Bumgarner pitched into the eighth inning, Kelby Tomlinson drove in three runs and the San Francisco Giants beat the Atlanta Braves 6-1 on Wednesday night. Matt Duffy added a two-run dou- ble and Hunter Pence had an RBI sin- gle for San Francisco, which has won 16 of 21. Bumgarner (12-6), last year's World Series MVP and a three-time All-Star, allowed seven hits, one run and struck out nine in 7 1-3 innings. Just two baserunners made it into scoring position against the big left- hander. Williams Perez (4-2) surrendered 10 hits, two walks and six runs in six-plus innings for the Braves, who have lost 11 of 14. Bumgarner gave up a leadoff sin- gle to Nick Markakis in the first and retired 10 straight before Chris John- son singled in the fourth. Tomlinson's opposite-field single made it 2-0 in the second, and San Francisco was up 3-0 in the fourth when Ehire Adrianza doubled and scored on Tomlinson's single up the middle. Duffy and Pence drove in their runs in the Giants' three-run sev- enth. Bumgarner gave up Ryan Lavarn- way's RBI double in the seventh and left in the eighth after Eury Perez's infield single. Bumgarner's performance re- versed a personal season-long trend on the road. He had gone 6-4 with a 4.50 ERA in 10 starts away from home, a considerable contrast from the 11-4 record and 2.22 ERA he had in 18 road starts last year. Bumgarner threw strikes on 81 of his 116 pitches. THESCORE By John Hickey Bay Area News Group OAKLAND The Coliseum's trans- formation from A's wonderland to blunderland continued unabated Wednesday in Oakland's 7-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Chris Davis' grand slam in the 10th inning gave the win to the O's, but as much as anything it was Oakland's inability to cash in early in the game that did the A's in. Oakland went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. The A's have averaged 50 home wins per season the last three years, each of which saw them playing after Game 162. With Wednesday's loss they are 24-33 at home, 48-61 overall and have won just five of 18 Coliseum se- ries. Looking at the chance to win a sixth home series, the A's took a 3-1 lead in the fourth, but it should have scored more. The offense shut down after Marcus Semien's two-run double. "We had some situational at- bats where we didn't get the job done," manager Bob Melvin said. The A's first five hits were all dou- bles, but only Semien's came with a runner in scoring position. "We had some situations, man on sec- ond we don't get him over, man on third we don't get him home. In close games, those will come back and bite you." The A's came into the game with a chance to win their sixth home series. But things unraveled in the 10th when reliever Arnold Leon saw back-to-back singles put men at the corners. Oakland set up the force at the plate with an intentional walk of Geraldo Parra, but after Leon induced a pop fly from Adam Jones, Davis deliv- ered his 28th homer and the Col- iseum's sad saga continued. Now come the Astros, a team that as recently as a year ago, wanted to be the A's, Oakland having made the playoffs three years running while the Astros were an afterthought. Now it's the A's who'd like to emulate Houston, which came into Wednesday with a three-game lead in the Ameri- can League West. "This is a team that earlier in the season was good, and now they're a lot better," Melvin said. "They have not only enhanced their roster, they've got a lot of confidence now." "We're going to do well," Me- dieros said during practice Wednesday afternoon at Sa- cred Heart Parish School. "Their commitment to the team is phe- nomenal this year." Most of the athletes on the se- nior-heavy 8-man squad spent the summer hitting the gym to prepare for the season, said Me- dieros, who was assistant coach for the 2014 season and has coached the school's baseball team for the past three years. "When I get here most of the kids are waiting for me instead of me waiting for them," Medie- ros said. "Their goal is the sec- tion championship." The team will have a chance to avenge its Nov. 14, 2014 loss to Redding Christian in the sec- ond round of the playoffs when it opens the season against the Lions at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 in Palo Cedro. Despite being in his first year as head coach, Medieros is no stranger to the game in the north state. He helped coach the South to victory in the 38th an- nual Lions All-Star game July 18 in Oroville and has been a referee for the past seven years. Both experiences have helped him identify players and teams to prepare for, he said. Medieros said all of his se- niors qualify as standouts go- ing into the season but listed a few to keep an eye on. Al House, at running back and defensive back, is one of the hardest workers on the team, Medieros said. Medieros expects House to be among the top rush- ers in the section this season. Other standouts include quar- terbacks Richie Borges, also an offensive lineman and defensive end, and Travis Gordon, also a receiver. Running back, receiver and defensive back Kavin Mc- Clellan and lineman Bryce Baer round out the seniors to watch. Medieros has 15 players on the field at practice this week and said four more are expected to join the team when school starts. After going 5-5 in the 2014 regular season and beating Hayfork in a 70-60 shootout in the first round of the playoffs, the Warriors look to start 2015 strong against Redding Chris- tian and carry that success to a section title.
