DearMary:Ihavea beautiful crystal vase that over the years has ac- quired a buildup of residue that I cannot re- move. Do you have a suggestion on how to remove it? — Pat Dear Pat: That buildup is likely cal- cium, lime and other min- erals from years of stand- ing water. You may need to experiment a bit, but I'm sure you can return that vase to its sparkling beauty. Here are two sim- ple and completely harm- less methods: Method 1: Start by fill- ing the vase with white vinegar to cover past the murky area. If the vase is large, you can use a mix- ture of vinegar and wa- ter. Allow the vinegar to sit for a couple of hours. Swish the liquid around to see how much of the film has been loosened. If the film layer is thick and not coming loose, add a cup of uncooked rice. Cover and shake the container. The rice will "scrub" to loosen the tough layers. Use the bot- tlebrush to remove any re- maining film from the in- terior of the vase. Empty the vase and wash with mild soap. Dry completely. Method 2: Fill the vase with water and drop in one or two denture tab- lets, depending on the vase size. Allow to sit and work overnight. In the morning, agitate the container gently to en- sure all of the depos- its and mineral build up have come loose. Empty the vase and wash with mild soap and water. Rinse well and dry com- pletely. Dear Mary: In response to your recent post, "Do- It-Yourself Pest Control for Home and Garden," I wanted to let you know about another really cheap method using Taurus SC with 9.1 percent Fipronil — which contains the same active ingredient as Front- line for dogs but is way cheaper. The cost might seem a bit steep at $50, but a 20-ounce container, when properly mixed with water, makes 25 gallons of product that will kill fleas, ants, cockroaches, spiders, bedbugs, houseflies and everything else. It's harm- less to humans, dogs, cats and birds, and has a sta- ble shelf life of years when stored in the dark. Sim- ply mix with water and pour into a sprayer. It will kill an entire ants' nest for good when sprayed around the nest (not directly into it). Under the sink and be- hind the toilet it remains effective for at least a year. You can spray your drapes or blinds without stain- ing them and you won't have any more houseflies indoors for the next six months because they al- ways go to the windows where you've sprayed, and then they die. I may sound like a salesman for Taurus SC, but I'm not. I have just used it for years and know for certain just how effec- tive and inexpensive it is to do my own pest con- trol. — Doug Dear Doug: Thanks for the information. I need to make sure my readers un- derstand that Taurus SC is not a substitute for Front- line for dogs, as it should not be sprayed on or in- gested by animals or hu- mans for any purpose. It should be used as you de- scribe, to treat the ar- eas that pesky insects fre- quent. My limited research says that the toxicity of Fipronil on humans has been tested in numerous studies, with no adverse effects. That being said, I recommend that read- ers should always conduct their own due diligence before proceeding with any kind of do-it-yourself pest control. Dear Mary: I have two dogs and I rely on piddle pads, as they are home alone for about 12 hours at a stretch on the days I work. Sometimes they miss, if you know what I mean. This has made a mess of the carpeting in that room. Just this week I planned to sham- poo with my Bissell car- pet-cleaning machine, but discovered that I didn't have any carpet shampoo. I decided to use hot water and Nok- Out instead. I realize the manufacturer proba- bly wouldn't recommend it, but I wanted you to know that Nok-Out got my carpet much cleaner than regular sham- poo does. I just wanted you to know how well it works as a carpet cleaner when paired with really hot water, and how much I love Nok-Out. — Linda Dear Linda: Great news, Linda. I'm happy you didn't have to replace that carpet. Because Nok- Out is primarily an odor elimination disinfectant system, I'll bet your car- pet now smells as good as it looks, too. I love that you've discovered this ad- ditional use for Nok-Out (which, as you may know, is going through a name change to Sniper — but only the name is chang- ing, not the awesome product). CORNING The Corning Veterans Hall, at 1620 So- lano St., will come alive 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday with the largest gathering of veterans services at one time in the history of Te- hama County. Eighteen months ago, the first Veterans Expo was held at Red Bluff's Veterans Hall under the leadership of Tehama County Democrats. From that event, the Tehama County Veterans Collabor- ative was formed to bring together veteran related services to better meet the needs of the 6,000 veter- ans residing in Tehama County. Temporarily operating under the auspices of Te- hama Together, the Col- laborative is working to become an independent nonprofit organization with current members of the board including John Minton, Kevin Benson, Sr., Douglas England, Beth Nervo, Kelly Osborne, Mi- chael LePeilbet and Orle Jackson. Simultaneous to the founding of the Collab- orative, Tehama County greatly increased its focus on veterans with the hir- ing of full-time Veterans Service Officer Kelly Os- borne, and the opening of an expanded Veterans Ser- vice Office at 955 Main St. in Red Bluff — in the Bank of America building. This office is encouraging lo- cal businesses to provide discounts for veteran cus- tomers and issuing veter- ans discount cards for use at those businesses. For this second Expo, sponsors include Tehama Together, Inc., Tehama County Democrats and Tehama County Republi- cans. Musical entertain- ment will be provided by vocalist Mitchell Sauve and Richard Hammond on keyboard. Door prize contributors include Gold Exchange, M&M Ranch House, Dig- nity Health, Les Schwabb — Corning and Debbie Sprague.
