ByEileenNg The Associated Press KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA A piece of a wing found washed up on Reunion Is- land last week is from Ma- laysia Airlines Flight 370 that vanished last year, Ma- laysia's prime minister an- nounced early Thursday, saying he hoped the news would end the "unspeak- able" uncertainty of the passengers' families. The disappearance of the Boeing 777 jetliner 515 days ago while on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014, has been one of the biggest myster- ies in aviation history. Of- ficials believed it crashed in the southern Indian Ocean, killing all 239 peo- ple aboard, but it is still un- known why the plane went down. "It is with a very heavy heartthatImusttellyouthat an international team of ex- perts has conclusively con- firmed that the aircraft de- brisfoundonReunionIsland is indeed MH370," Prime Minister Najib Razak told reporters. The French ter- ritory is thousands of miles from the areabeingsearched for wreckage from the flight. U.S. and French officials involved in the investiga- tion were more cautious, stopping short of full confir- mation but saying it made sense that the metal piece of the wing, known as the flaperon, came from Flight 370. Intact and encrusted with barnacles, the flap- eron was found on a beach and sent to France for scru- tiny by the French civil avi- ation investigation depart- ment known by its acronym BEA, and members from its Malaysian and Australian counterparts. "We now have physi- cal evidence that, as I an- nounced on 24th March last year, flight MH370 tragi- cally ended in the southern Indian Ocean," Najib said. "The burden and uncer- tainty faced by the fami- lies during this time has been unspeakable. It is my hope that this confirmation, however tragic and painful, will at least bring certainty to the families and loved ones of the 239 people on- board MH370. They have our deepest sympathy and prayers," he said. At a news conference in Paris, Deputy Prosecutor Serge Mackowiak didn't outright confirm that the debris belonged to Flight 370 but said there were strong indications that it was the case. "The very strong conjec- tures are to be confirmed by complementary analy- sis that will begin tomor- row morning," Mackowiak said. "The experts are con- ducting their work as fast as they can in order to give complete and reliable infor- mation as quickly as possi- ble." A U.S. official familiar with the investigation said the flaperon clearly is from a Boeing 777. However, a team of experts in France examining the part hadn't yet been able to find any- thing linking it specifically to the missing plane, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity be- cause there was no authori- zation to talk publicly about the case. With no other 777s or fla- perons known to be miss- ing, it makes sense that the part comes from Flight 370, but the U.S. and Boeing team members are merely trying "to be precise," the official said. Analysts say the inves- tigators will examine the metal with high-powered microscopes to gain in- sight into what caused the plane to go down. It is also not known why Flight 370 — less than an hour into the journey — turned back from its original flight path and headed in an opposite direction before turning left and flying south over the Indian Ocean for hours. Malaysia Airlines said in a statement that rela- tives of the passengers and crew "have already been in- formed and we extend our deepest sympathies to those affected." The statement said the finding was "indeed a ma- jor breakthrough for us in resolving the disappear- ance of MH370. We expect and hope that there would be more objects to be found which would be able to help resolve this mystery." The thunderstorms will expand to the mid-Atlantic and Southeast in the afternoon and at night. Localized downpours will lead to flash flooding. Aside from a shower or two across northern New England, high pressure will keep the Northeast and Great Lakes dry as heat and humidity remains absent. Triple-digit heat will be in full swing throughout the southern Plains and Desert Southwest as the rest of the Southwest turns warmer.
