Wednesday, February 8, 2012 – Daily News WORLD BRIEFING Russian foreign minister pushes reforms in Syria BEIRUT (AP) — Days after blocking a U.S.-backed peace plan at the U.N., senior Russian officials pushed for reforms Tuesday during an emergency meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad, promoting a settle- ment to end the uprising without removing him from power. Thousands of flag-waving government supporters cheered the Russians in the Syri- an capital of Damascus, while to the north, Assad's forces pounded the opposition city of Homs — underscoring the sharp divisions propelling the country toward civil war. The violence has led to the most severe international isolation in more than four decades of Assad family rule, with country after country calling home their envoys. France, Italy, Spain and Belgium pulled their ambassadors from Damascus, as did six Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia. Ger- many, whose envoy left the country this month, said he would not be replaced. The moves came a day after the U.S. closed its embassy in Syria and Britain recalled its ambassador. Turkey, once a strong Assad supporter and now one of his most vocal critics, added its voice to the international condemnation, with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan say- ing his country cannot remain silent about massacres in Syria. He said Turkey would ''launch a new initiative with countries that stand by the Syrian people instead of the regime.'' Komen resignation, Obama contraception rule furor, pump new energy into politics DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A political firestorm over abortion and birth control spread suddenly on Tuesday. A high-ranking official resigned from the Komen breast-can- cer charity after its backtracking treaty with Planned Parenthood, and Republican presi- dential candidates blistered the Obama admin- istration for a recent ruling on Catholic hospi- tals and contraception. The White House made a point of declar- ing it wanted to allay the concerns of church- affiliated employers — many would be required to provide birth control coverage to their workers under the new rules — but there was no word on how those concerns might be addressed. The two-track drama pumped new furor into longstanding disputes that sometimes take a backseat in political campaigns because the lines are so familiar and firmly drawn. Last week's Komen-Planned Parenthood dispute stirred many women's groups that support legal abortion. And the Obama ruling touched a nerve with moderate Roman Catholics who support contraceptives but also defend their church's right to run its hospitals and other institutions according to religious convictions. Republican presidential candidates pounced on what they considered a blunder by President Barack Obama. They believe his administration's ruling will alienate moderate Catholic voters who could prove crucial in November in Ohio, Pennsylvania and else- where. There also could be political repercussions from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure con- troversy. The breast-cancer charity, facing fierce criticism, mostly from women's groups, quickly overturned its decision last week to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a major provider of abortions, but it also screens women for breast cancer and other health problems. GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — A few years ago, John Rachor painted his heli- copter orange and yellow, so it would be easier to spot if he ever crashed and became the target of a search and rescue operation in the rugged forests of southwestern Oregon. Over the past six years, he has been the one doing the spotting. On Saturday, Rachor found three mem- bers of a Gold Beach family after they got lost while picking mushrooms. The family spent six nights without food, slept in a hol- low log, and considered killing their dog for food. Rain showers left them damp and cold as they fought through wet brush. Without a lighter, they couldn't start a fire to ward off cold nights when temperatures dipped into the 30s. It was a similar story in 2006, when Rachor spotted a San Francisco mother and her two daughters who had been lost more than a week in the same rugged region of the Klamath Mountains, where steep ridges covered with loose rocks, brush and tall Douglas fir trees make the going tough, and a maze of abandoned logging roads can get people without a map and compass hope- lessly lost. In between he has found several others — he doesn't keep track of how many — who didn't get as much attention. ''He's crazy good,'' said Sara Rubrecht, search and rescue coordinator for Josephine County. ''I have a picture of the area he found the subjects (on Saturday). When you talk about a needle in a haystack, that's an understatement.'' She said Rachor has something that can't be taught in a classroom, a ''natural ability to see things from the sky.'' Romney hopes to bag two more states ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) — Republi- can front-runner Mitt Romney battled Rick Santorum and Ron Paul on Tuesday in political caucuses in Minnesota and Col- orado, hoping to extend his winning streak in the race for the presidential nomination. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich mounted no significant campaign in either state, looking ahead to primaries else- where. Romney prevailed in both Minnesota and Colorado in 2008, the first time he ran for the nomination, but the GOP has become more conservative in both states since then under the influence of tea party activists. There were 37 Republican National Convention delegates at stake in Minneso- ta and 33 more in Colorado. In addition, Missouri held a non-bind- ing primary on Tuesday. The state picks its delegates at caucuses next month. Father who killed self, sons in Wash. left voicemail saying 'didn't want to go on' GRAHAM, Wash. (AP) — Before set- ting his house ablaze and killing himself and his two young sons, Josh Powell left a voicemail for family members saying he couldn't live without the boys and didn't want to go on anymore. Oregon copter pilot has knack for finding lost ''He's flying a helicopter at the same time,'' Rubrecht said. ''He obviously is a good multi-tasker.'' Rachor attributes his success to good eyesight, an ability to spot things out of the ordinary, a willingness to think outside the box, and the efforts of the scores of other people involved in a search. ''I like to think of it as a knack'' more than luck, he said. ''It wasn't me. There are a lot of people that put a lot of effort into it.'' Rachor, 63, is a fourth-generation Ore- gonian. The son of a log truck driver, he went to a technical college to study diesel mechanics. He served as a mechanic in the Navy Seabees in Vietnam, and was married with two kids and working for a truck dis- tributorship when he got a chance to buy a Burger King franchise. He eventually built 13 of them, but has since sold them and been elected a Jackson County commis- sioner. He first learned to fly an airplane about 35 years ago, and switched to a helicopter so he could fly to his remote vacation home, where a grassy field is long enough for a small plane to take off, but not without fly- ing under a towering steel bridge. The home is in Agness, a remote and tiny settlement about 30 miles up the Rogue River from the southern Oregon Coast that lives off sport fishing and whitewater rafting. It is just a few miles from where he found the mush- room pickers. His four-seater Robinson R-44 used to be painted white, with flames on the sides. ''I painted it bright orange and yellow so it would be visible in case I ever crashed, they could find me in the snow,'' he said. ABC News obtained what it says was a voicemail Powell left for his family mem- bers. In the recording played Tuesday on ''Good Morning America'' Powell also said he was calling to say goodbye and apologize. ''I'm sorry to everyone I've hurt,'' he is heard saying. ''Goodbye.'' Powell, the husband of missing Utah woman Susan Powell, died along with his children Sunday in Washington. An autop- sy showed the children also suffered hatch- et wounds to their necks. He was a person of interest in his wife's 2009 disappear- ance. As authorities work to determine exact- ly why Powell committed the murders at the Washington residence, investigators said they're no closer to answering the question they've had for two years. Prosecutors want Sandusky kept indoors over complaints HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Prose- cutors asked Tuesday to have Jerry San- dusky kept indoors as part of his bail conditions, citing complaints that the former Penn State football assistant was seen outside and watching children in a schoolyard from the back porch of his home, where he remains under house arrest while awaiting trial on child molestation charges. The state attorney general's office argued in a court filing that Sandusky's bail conditions should be revised so that he is not allowed outside except to seek medical treatment. Prosecutors said they opposed Sandusky's request to be allowed contact with his grandchildren as he awaits trial on 52 child sex-abuse charges. ''Several individuals from the adja- cent elementary school have expressed concerns for the safety of children at their school and the adjacent neighbor- hood,'' prosecutors wrote. ''Such con- cerns will only mushroom if defendant is permitted to roam at will outside his house.'' The allegation he was watching chil- dren was outlined in an exhibit attached to the filing, a memo from a state inves- tigator to a county probation officer that said a teacher and intern had reported concern for the children's safety. ''They advised the neighbor that yes- terday they had the children outside for recess as it was a warmer day, and that they both witnessed Mr. Sandusky on his rear house deck watching the chil- dren play,'' wrote investigator Anthony Sassano on Jan. 26. Bread ranks No. 1 and potato chips No. 10 on ranking of salt ATLANTA (AP) — Bread and rolls are the No. 1 source of salt in the American diet, accounting for more than twice as much sodium as salty junk food like pota- to chips. That surprising finding comes in a gov- ernment report released Tuesday that includes a list of the top 10 sources of sodium. Salty snacks actually came in at the bottom of the list compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Preven- tion. ''Potato chips, pretzels, and popcorn — which we think of as the saltiest foods in our diet — are only No. 10,'' said CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden.
