Red Bluff pulled off a thrilling 54-49 win over the Paradise Lady Bobcats to take over first place in the Eastern Athletic League- South. It was the same formula that has seen the Lady Spar- tans through their five-game win streak. A total team effort that turns the game over to their star guard Lily Brose in the waning minutes with a chance to win. Brose scored the Spar- tans final seven points of the game on her way to a 20- point night and broke a tie twice in the final minute. With the crowded gym and nearly everyone in it dressed in pink to support cancer awareness the girls fed off the energy to beat Paradise for the first time in three tries this season. Red Bluff improved to 13-9 overall and 6-4 in the EAL-South, a game better on both fronts than Paradise. Cori Schatz chipped in with 11 points for Red Bluff and had a couple of crucial offensive rebounds down the stretch. Oakland Athletics owner Lew Wolff said Tuesday that the team has agreed to extend the con- tracts of the general man- ager as well as team Pres- ident Michael Crowley through the 2019 season. Wolff, confirming com- ments first made on Bloomberg Television, wrote in an email to The Associated Press that the deals are in the process of being finalized. Wolff is counting on Beane's lead- ership and innovation to lead the club in a new sta- dium in the San Jose area. Paradise was led by a 12- point, 13-rebound perfor- mance form their center Michaela Mundt. The game went back- and-forth for most of the 32 minutes. Red Bluff led for most of the third period, but the Bobcats climbed back into a 42-42 tie with 6 1/2 minutes remaining. Paradise would eventual- ly take a 47-44 lead with 2:38 remaining. After the Spartans missed the back end of a pair of free throws with just over two minutes to go, seven of his 14 points in the final four minutes to give the Timberwolves their third straight win. Schatz grabbed an impor- tant offensive board. Red Bluff worked the ball to Brose who drove to the basket and was fouled. She converted both free throws to tie the game up. A minute later Red Bluff had the ball under the Par- adise basket and Smith found Brose on an inbound pass who laid it in for a Spartans 49-47 lead. Mundt responded with a spin move in the post to square the game back up. After Brose missed a 3- pointer, Schatz once again grabbed an offensive board to give the Spartans another chance. This time Brose drove straight to the basket and — Nikola Pekovic had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Michael Beasley added 17 points and 14 boards to lead the Minnesota Timber- wolves to an 86-84 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night in their first game without the sus- pended Kevin Love. Jim- mer Fredette scored all 13 of his points in the final period. But Tyreke Evans and Cousins combined to shoot just 8 for 26 to snap their three-game winning streak. The Kings had a frenetic shot to win their fourth straight game in the final seconds, but Donte Green's 3-pointer from the corner missed at the buzzer. Evans finished with 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting, while Thornton scored 21 of his 22 points in the first three quarters. The Kings trailed 69-60 to start the fourth, and coach Keith Smart left his starting backcourt of Thornton and Evans on the bench and put his trust in Fredette. After clank- ing his first two attempts of the game Tuesday night, Fredette found his range. He buried three 3-point- ers, scored off a steal and fed Green for a dunk that got Sacramento back in it. The A's are hoping for a resolution to the long-standing dispute soon. Beane and Crowley hold small ownership stakes in the team. Crow- ley took over as team president at the end of the 1998 season. Beane has been Oak- land's general manager since 1997. He is the sub- ject of Michael Lewis' 2003 book on baseball statistics and economics titled ''Moneyball,'' which was made into a film starring Brad Pitt as Beane last year. Beane bucked the base- ball trend of relying on the common trio of statistics — batting average, home runs and RBIs for hitters; wins, losses and ERA for pitchers — and instead turned to hard numbers over subjective scouting to fuel his team's success- ful runs in the early 2000s. His staff helped usher in what became known as the stats revolu- tion, a complete overhaul from the early days of the basic boxscore, the premise behind the best- selling book that immor- talized Beane beyond the Bay Area. 1B Wednesday February 8, 2012 A's agree to extend Beane through 2019 Jessica Macdonald Tehama Family Fitness Center 2498 South Main St • Red Bluff • 528-8656 We offer the facility and programs that will help you make your body its best.
