8A Daily News – Saturday, February 4, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith How can nonbelievers in God lead lives as good as many believers do? GOODNESS IS OUR NATURE Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Center & Monastery: All of us know "good" people who don't believe in God or who are not religious. Therefore, it is obvious that a belief in God or even religion is not a prerequisite for being a good person. If that is the case, then the question becomes, "what makes a good person good?" From the Buddhist perspective, basic goodness is our fundamental nature. We don't have to join any particular religion or group to manifest it. Tenderness of heart, fear- lessness and intelligence are basic to who we are, regard- less of our religion. Many people and religions believe that this fundamental quality is separate from ourselves. They believe goodness comes from some external, divine source. However, the truth is that these qualities are avail- able to us in every moment. In Buddhism this fundamental quality is called "Bud- dha-nature." Buddha-nature is our potential for enlighten- ment. It is our birthright, regardless of our religion. As dif- ficult as it is to believe, even people who commit the most unspeakable atrocities possess this basic goodness. There is something they care about. There is some chink in their external armor. So there is hope for everyone. Those who act in less than enlightened ways or harm others do so out of ignorance and because of the clinging, grasping nature of their mind. Through meditation we can begin to let go of ego-clinging attachment and get in touch with our fundamental, basic goodness. GOD DECIDES WHAT'S FAIR Pastor Emeritus Raymond Davis Jr., Greater Corinthi- an Church of the Christ: The Bible gives answers to our question, giving us understanding of both believer and unbeliever. The believer is seen as one with a clean heart, godly and righteous by faith. The unbeliever carries scrip- tural word stigmas — wicked, ungodly, unrighteous, evil heart, resulting in unfortunate circumstances (Hebrews 3:12, 18-19). But in the world, God's goodness is extended to the good and the bad, believer and unbelievers. Why this kind of equality? The question carries a universal complaint: "Why do the wicked prosper?" (Jeremiah 12:1b) But the issues of what is fair and just rest with God (Psalm 89:14). Asaph, the 73rd Psalmist, writes of how he observed the prosperity of unbelievers, becoming envious of them. Then he says, "until I went into the sanctuary of God." It was at this point God gave him understanding about unbe- lievers (Psalm 73:3, 12, 16-18). The question has implied emphasis on the unbeliever. God's love is patient with all men — "not willing that any should perish" (2nd Peter 3:9b) God's goodness is designed to bring men to repentance (Romans 2:4). The 73rd Psalm leaves us with a word of cure for a troubled heart when we are tempted to question the fair- ness and justice of God in dealing with life's puzzling cir- cumstances — "Draw near to God, and trust in Him" (Psalm 73:28). Send your questions for one of our panels of religion columnists to Helen Gray at The Star, 1729 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64108. Send email to hgray@kcstar.com. Button, button, who has the button? Did you ever play the game "But- ton, button, who has the button?" when you were young? My friends and I used to play it a lot during our recess- es. In our adult lives, we often still play the game. Have you ever had your but- tons pushed? Then you know some- one found your hidden button. We can call them buttons or trig- gers; they both mean the same. People are able to push our buttons, because we have unresolved issues. Proverbs 4:23 says, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it springs the issues of life." Jesus puts it like this – in Mark 7 – the things that defile us spring from the heart that is in us. He is talking about the fruit of pushed buttons. The word resolved means: to settle or find a solution to a problem, dispute, or contentious matter; settle, sort out, solve, fix, straighten out, deal with, put right, or rectify. Resolving a previously unresolved issue means that we come to a settled conclusion. Our questions are answered and put to rest. We work together to agree, although we may be agreeing to disagree. Then we declare that it is over and done with and no longer a problem. It is no longer up in the air because it is resolved. People with unresolved issues of their own are often contentious. They seem to thrive on starting an argument. A contentious person is determined to find our buttons and push them. Have you ever said of someone, "They sure know how to push my buttons." Push- able buttons in our heart reveal a root that is linked to a past event that is still open-ended. Forgiveness is the key that will dismantle our hot buttons and render them useless. Clyde W. Brandt is now the pastor at First Southern Baptist Church, Red Bluff, where he has been interim pastor since April. Brandt was born in South Carolina, but raised in Okla- Let's talk about the hot button of guilt. Have you ever had someone lay a guilt trip on you? Then you know what I am talking about. Guilt is often the result of hiding some- thing in our heart from oth- ers. Have you ever been dragged down by guilt from past sins? There is good news in Romans 8:1, "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit." The Ampli- fied Bible says, "...no adjudging guilty of wrong..." The word adjudge means to declare to be true, condemn some- one to pay a penalty, judge, deem, find, pronounce, proclaim, rule, determine, consider, believe. It is the grounds for the sentence for our wrong. Marilyn Adams GodTalk The blood bought believer will never be judged guilty of even one sin: past, present, future. No one will ever prove that you are a sinner condemned to die. You are blameless before God. Jude 24 says, "Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy." No one will ever prove you guilty because you are covered in the Blood of the Lamb. Throw off your guilt. It is a guilt trip in which you don't have to stay. Do you know that guilt will cause physical and mental illness? It has been scientifical- He gradu- ated from California Baptist Col- lege, now called Cali- fornia Bap- tist Universi- ty, in River- side. Brandt homa. He surrendered to preach in 1966, under the leadership of Senior pas- tor, Milton "Pete" James, Stewardship Baptist Church in Hayward. Confess the hidden sin and get back to the truth we are called to walk in. "Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom." Psalm 51:6. Listen to these verses in Romans. They prove that guilt is a lie. "Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and further- more is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who makes intercession for us." Romans 8:33-34. If you have never put your faith and trust in Jesus, and received Him as your Lord and Savior, I urge you to do so now. You can have your sins forgiv- en forever. Simply acknowledge that you are a sinner, condemned to die. Jesus took your condemnation. He took your place. Romans 10:13 says, "For whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved." And by the way, if you have already confessed Jesus as your Lord, let the accusers roar. You are free. Marilyn Adams accepted the Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in 1958. A debilitating accident in 1977 permitted the Lord to woo her into intimate relationship with Him. He taught her timeless truths that sustain her and permeate her teachings. She ministers primarily to women in crisis or incarceration. Brandt named pastor at First Southern Baptist Red Bluff. Most recently he served Feather River Associa- tion as Director of Mis- sions. He has been married to wife Carol, for 48 years and she serves with him. They have 3 grown children, and eleven grandchildren. They are also co-founders of Homes of Hope for VIDA, victims in domes- tic abuse. He also partici- pates with the Red Bluff Ministerial Association.
