ByJulieZeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter TEHAMA The Tehama County Museum Marty Graffell Annex was filled to near capacity with about 115 people coming out Sat- urday for a concert by The Cal- ifornia Heat Chorus, Red Bluff's Sweet Adeline group. The concert was a way for the museum to pay the singing group back for the many years of per- forming free at the Jubilee, sched- uled for Sept. 12 this year, Presi- dent Chris Bauer said. "They've been very good to us so I went to the board to ask if we could offer them the annex for a concert to raise funds to cover some of their expenses," Bauer said. "We provide the facilities and opportunity and they pro- vide the show." The group, which has 27 mem- bers, has many singers who have been a part of the Sweet Adeline tradition for about 30 years and they come from as far north ar the Oregon border and as far south as Clear Lake, Director Anita Main said. Part of what brought on Sum- merfest is that Bauer was shocked to hear the price the group pays just for music, which is about $250 per song just to get it into their hands not to mention cos- tumes, traveling for competitions and other things, she said. Costs for a new song include copyright, having special ar- rangements made for barber- shop quartet and sending out for learning media, which is pro- vided by a company in Tennes- see, Main said. The group, which holds an an- nual Christmas concert the first Saturday in December, is always looking for new singers and in- terested parties can call 895- 0139. Rehearsals are held at 7 p.m. Thursdays at Metteer School, 695 Kimball Road, in Red Bluff. Gunner was killed in a July 24, 2013 collision, in which his mother, Katie Ramsey, was seri- ously injured, after their Nissan was hit from behind and pushed into the path of a semi truck. "We have 10 teams today," Ramsey said. "Teams from Chico and Cottonwood who all came for the first one as well." The team Gunner's Guard- ians, which was made up of family and friends and coached by Ramsey, finished the day un- defeated to take the champion- ship 5-0. The support from the com- munity has been incredible, Ramsey said. The stands in both fields were filled with spectators from teams who were between games as well as their support- ers and others who came out in honor of Gunner. During the tournament, an intermission was held to honor the little boy who was loved by many with a balloon release from the pitch- er's mound at Frey Field. "Thank you everyone for com- ing out today," Ramsey said. "Thank you friends, family, vol- unteers. Thank you for the do- nations. Thank you for being a part of a special day. What bet- ter way to honor Gunner than to all be out here together." Gunner attended the First Church of God Preschool for two years and had graduated one month before the accident. He had also spent two years in the Red Bluff Little League. "He was a silly, happy little boy," Ramsey said. "He was well- liked by his peers, his favorite color was purple and he loved to sing and dance. He loved base- ball and school. What better way to give back to the community than the things he loved. This is special. We're all here for the same reason. We're all here to celebrate Gunner." Half of whatever was raised will be given to the First Church of God and the other half to the Red Bluff Little League. Ramsey said she hopes the tournament will continue to grow as plans are to take it back to a larger event. The first year had 14 teams over a three-day period and next year the plans are to do either a two- or three- day event with 16 teams. It is heart-warming to see the com- munity come out and celebrate her boy, she said. If Ramsey could say anything to help people learn from what happened to her, it is that they pay attention while driving. The driver of the vehicle that hit Ramsey's was reported to be texting while driving. "Please don't text and drive," Ramsey said. "Don't take your eyes off the road. Tomorrow is never promised."
