The run originally started to promote acceptance and inclu- sion of Special Olympic athletes throughout the world. Locally, participants started on Hickory and Main streets chant- ing and laughing as they made their way to the Tehama County Courthouse, where the event took place. As the crowd cheered every- one on they headed to the court house steps with smiles and the torch in hand. The teams got to the stage and soon after the speakers began to share with the audience the im- portance of this event. State Theatre staff estimated the crowd at between 200 and 300 based on pre-sale numbers and almost every seat in the front section and part-way into the balcony was filled. Schoelen, the daughter of Su- zanne Schoelen, is a 2012 Red Bluff High School graduate who distinguished herself first in high school by being chosen out of 1,000 students to receive the Disney Spirit Award at the World Strides Heritage Competition in Anaheim. Auditioning for season 14 of "American Idol" in San Francisco with the song "Over You" by Mi- randa Lambert, Schoelen moved on to Hollywood Week where she sang Carrie Underwood's "Some- thing in the Water." Schoelen said it is much easier to perform for big crowds than small audiences like the one in Red Bluff, where there was the added pressure of performing for those she has known for years. The same goes for the auditions in "American Idol," including singing in front of judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. "It was very nerve-wracking," Schoelen said of being in front of just the judges and camera. This was not the first time that Schoelen auditioned for "Ameri- can Idol." "I auditioned when I was 16 in San Jose, but I didn't make it past the cattle call," Schoelen said. "This last season I made it to the top 24 girls and the top 48 overall. I decided it was a great opportunity and I needed to see it through.
