4A Daily News – Thursday, January 26, 2012 BULL & GELDING SALE RED BLUFF Whoa doggy Trade Show offers variety By ANDREA WAGNER DN Staff Writer A barking batch of 19 stock dogs are up for auc- tion this week at the Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale. Making their debut Wednesday afternoon, prospective bidders and many guests got to see the dogs working with cattle on the field at the fair- grounds. The dogs, between 12 and 48 months old, all compete in one class and are measured and scored on their ranch dog skills. In a somewhat muddy field, the pooches headed out one by one trying to herd a handful of cattle toward a pen, guided by a handler atop a horse mid- field. Five judges scored the dogs during five-minute increments. For the first two minutes of the trial, the dogs were on their own. Points are scored in strength, obedience and control. The dogs must be able to go to the lead of the lead cow and show sufficient power to stop or turn the cattle when chal- lenged. Dogs are also rated on how well they obey com- mands and try to help the handler accomplish tasks. There are added points for dogs who can show some ingenuity to think for themselves to keep the cattle under control, not being overly dependent on the handlers. Of the five judges' scores, the highest and lowest are thrown out and the other three are aver- aged to give a total point score. First on the field Wednesday was "Ajax," from breeder Patrick Frazee of Florissant, Colo., who scored a 76 in the first go. The remaining 15 dogs followed in turn into the afternoon, skirting groups of cattle as they were let onto the field just east of the Don Smith Bull Sale Arena. Some local dogs and trainers are featured in the sale. "Flip," No. 6, who is consigned by Loren Holmes of Red Bluff and bred by Jim and Tanya Williams of Red Bluff, is said to come from "a long line of good cattle dogs." "I've been here almost 30 years and I've been here when there's snow," said Carlos Duarte, owner of Car- los' Silver of Roseville. "We've been doing good. For the first day it's been great." As one of the established businesses at the show, Duarte said he enjoys getting to see a lot of customers who have become good friends over the years. From jewelry and purses and belts with lots of bling to chaps, hats and custom signs to saddlery and various food booths, the show has variety. Everything from Corning Olive Oil, owned by Kathy and Ray Rogers, to businesses like Hickman Saddlery, whose sign says the company's from Claresholm, Alberta and Rogers Cowboy Supply out of Sparks, Nevada. Andrea White and Terry Barbo of Rabobank's Corn- ing branch said they were at the show to work a booth, but came early to look around. "It's a family thing," Barbo said. "They've got some- thing for everyone." White said she comes every year to check out the offerings. "It's always fun to come to," White said.
