Inside: Committed to His Campus t 2 Beckham Brothers t 2 President's Trophy Winners t 3 THE EPILOG A PUBLICATION FOR ALUMNI OF OKLAHOMA BETA t SIGMA PHI EPSILON SUMMER 2015 O klahoma Beta kicked the semester off by initiating 59 new brothers, and has now initiated close to 2,300 brothers in all. Several alumni were present to assist the men with the ritual. Alumni are always welcome to witness and participate in the ritual activities. It is definitely one of the traditions that binds our brotherhood through the years. Thanks to Andy Fugitt '80 for coordinating the alumni at this event. Contact us at ousigepalumni@gmail.com for information regarding initiation or other OU-SigEp activities. Brothers Reconnect at the All-Class Reunion As the OU basketball teams heated up, we chilled with a weekend of brotherhood and dancing at the fourth All-Class Reunion, February 20- 21. Friday night, members and alumni shared stories and barbecue at the weekend kickoff, which welcomed over 100 alumni. Yogi Schornick '79 led an entertaining and educational tutorial for the young lads in the art of doing things with haste. Saturday night, we had "A Red Door Affair" at the OKC Petroleum Club, which featured brothers dancing to the Wise Guys, with Brad McPherson '80 and featuring Phil Estes '81 on percussion and back-up vocals. We were thrilled by the excellent turnout on Saturday night; over 100 alumni and their dates were joined by 150 actives and their dates. We celebrated Rich Wager '73 and Mark Fish '83 for dedicating over 10 years of service to the Alumni Board. We also recognized three recent Renaissance Brothers: Brett Wimberley '85, Jason Hamilton '84, and Wayne Robertson '70. Finally, we recognized three Golden Hearts: Kimberley Wimberley, Mom Sandy (our current House Mom), and Kathy Pritchard. We look forward to seeing as many brothers as possible at the next All-Class Reunion. SigEp Remembers a Brother Not all alumni gatherings were jovial this semester. Oklahoma Betas joined in the celebration of the life of Dave May '73. After a gradual progressive decline from front temporal degeneration, Dave passed away on March 21. At the memorial service, Rich Wager gave a loving eulogy of his fellow Mag-7 brother. National SigEp chaplain, Father Ray Ackerman '78, presided over the SigEp burial ritual for Brother May. Twenty-five SigEp alumni left a symbolic rose to pay their respects. As Ray so eloquently stated, "The Mag-7, the seven brothers who rechartered the Oklahoma Beta chapter in 1969, were the beginning of a reformation in fraternities that has continued to this day, not only in SigEp, but across all fraternities nationwide." We pray for Dave's family and thank them for sharing Dave with our brotherhood, which would not exist without his legacy. Oklahoma Beta Supports the Future of Greek Life at OU We also saw attention brought to OU with the closing of the SAE house by President Boren. This unfortunate incident was a stark reminder that personal and collective poor behavior can result in life-altering consequences. Members of the Alumni Board have been in contact with OU officials and SigEp National officials in efforts to ensure that our men continue to exemplify the cardinal principles of SigEp. Oklahoma Beta strives to contribute to the future strength and growth of the OU Greek system. We applaud the OU administration for its reaction to the situation and look forward to their continued support of the Greek system at OU. Save the Date! We look forward to the 21st annual Steve Couch Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament this fall. The new venue will be Westwood Golf Course in Norman, and the tournament will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. on October 2. Lunch and dinner will be provided. This tournament helps to fund $5,000 in scholarships annually. Our first scholarship recipient is Benjamin Gorney '17. Ben is an energy management major and is interning with Anadarko Petroleum in Houston, Texas, this summer. As usual, contact us at ousigepalumni@gmail.com to make sure you are on the mailing list for this favorite annual event. Additionally, make plans to come by the SigEp house during Homecoming on October 24 and Dad's Day on November 7. In closing, we have Alumni Board meetings monthly (usually at Sauced on Paseo in OKC) and are always looking for new energy and input. We are also asking alumni to participate as career mentors, regardless of location. This entails one to two volunteer hours per month to assist junior and senior brothers in their career and life transitions. Please let us know if you are interested in participating via e-mail at ousigepalumni@gmail.com. On behalf of the Alumni Volunteer Corporation, I hope you have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you in the coming year. Fraternally, Marc Ganz '83 Oklahoma Beta Alumni and Volunteer Corporation President ousigepalumni@gmail.com Sigma Phi Epsilon Unifies as a Brotherhood to Strengthen the Future of Oklahoma Beta
