The WISE OLD OWL Epsilon Kappa ChaptEr of sigma Chi fratErnity at thE UnivErsity of mEmphis Summer 2015 FEATURES: Alumnus Spotlight 2 • Epsilon Kappa Finishes Semester Strong 3 • Save the Date 4 W e continue toward our $200,000 goal for our Legacy of Excellence Capital Campaign. Because of the strength of our brotherhood, we have raised $94,750 in cash contributions and $56,000 in in-kind donations, for a total of $150,750. We continue to have successes along the way to our goal, but every gift counts and every brother is encouraged to join our efforts. So what are the results of our efforts? We are refinancing our mortgage under very favorable terms, primarily because we have responsibly reduced our principal. We are expanding our property 25 feet to the east, and we are negotiating with Kappa Alpha Order to acquire even more. That expansion would allow us to add valuable parking and easier ingress/ egress of the property. We are planning inside and outside renovations to not only bring the Chapter House to like new, but to make it, and the property, better than it's ever been. We couldn't do it without your kind and generous support. Fraternities have come under fire in the press recently, some of it deserved, much of it not. We are pleased that Sigma Chi is only rarely mentioned and this press hasn't hurt our efforts at all! We'd like to thank our lead donors, Corky Dalton '61, Jeff Garrety '71, Bill Fulton '67, and the Stephen Evers Family, in addition to Olin Atkins '57, Adam Britt '03, and Kirk Caraway '94. We have also received generous donations from Zack McRae '00, Tracy Norville '65, Mike Harless '66, Paul Holt '68, Johnny Bannister '58, Lloyd Rowland '72, Scott Walker '88, Rex Hamm '70, Jimmie Price '80, Jamie Russell '02, Mike Dreve '71, David Barczak '83, Mike Logan '71, Bob Brown '72, Walter Allen '73, Don Wilson '68, and Sam Coates '10. We've come a long way since 2002, but we must not be satisfied by the status quo. Sigma Chi is the best on the planet and at the University of Memphis. We all should do our part in continuing this success and securing Epsilon Kappa's future as the leader on campus. With your help today we can begin work this summer! Make your check out to the Memphis Sigma Chi Housing Group, Inc., and mail to Gary Grear '69, 45 Forest Grove Cove, Piperton, TN 38017 today! Legacy of Excellence Capital Campaign Update Join Our List of Donors Today! Keeping Epsilon Kappa on Top Alumni luncheon with Greek advisor, Emilie Campbell. I n the last newsletter I told you things were starting to get busy at Epsilon Kappa. Well, they did, and they are still busy. The Chapter continues to excel in all areas. While initiating another large class, Epsilon Kappa Chapter of Sigma Chi continues to be the preeminent fraternity on campus. What's more, it seems a number of other fraternity chapters at the university are also growing and improving, which is good for the whole Greek system. EPSILON KAPPA DESERVING OF YOUR SUPPORT The capital campaign has enjoyed great success, but it's not too late for you to participate. If you haven't already done so, please consider a donation. The Epsilon Kappa Chapter has certainly shown itself deserving of your support in any way you can show it. It's not just financial, either. Just your presence at events like Homecoming, Founders' Day, and initiation are appreciated more than you can imagine. Staying on top is often much more difficult than getting to the top, and your support is vital. MYNDERS BRICK CAMPAIGN TO RESUME When we finish the capital campaign and renovation/expansion this summer, we'll reinstitute the Mynders Brick Campaign, as so many of you have requested. If you haven't seen how the front walkway looks with the brick dedications, you really need to. I think it's nicer than any of us imagined. Thank you to Brothers Stephen Evers '95 and Mike Keenan '89, who conceptualized, initiated, and completed phase one. HOUSE CORPORATION BOARD ELECTIONS The 2014 House Corporation Board was reelected for 2015. We are happy to serve and believe we have been very successful. We are consistently recognized as one of the top House Corporations in all Sigma Chi and, like the Epsilon Kappa Chapter, we intend to stay on top. That's not to say that there aren't many of you out there with great ideas and skills, and we all encourage you to step forward and participate. A number of us have served for quite a while, and new blood keeps us from becoming stale. Please consider serving when elections roll around next January. We are looking forward to fall 2015. Please come share in the events ahead. I can assure you'll be glad you did, whether it's the summer Chapter meeting, fall Homecoming, or any other Chapter event. Remember, it's not that you were a Sigma Chi, you are a Sigma Chi. For all the things above, and other reasons too numerous to list, I know that, more than ever, I am so proud I'm a Sigma Chi.
