ByMarilynAdams Doyouhavehab- its in your life that you have not been able to overcome? Do you keep fall- ing into the same rut? Have you tried to break a habit and can't succeed? Every action in our lives is first a thought. When we change our thoughts, our actions will follow. Every self-made plan eventually fails. It is es- sential to understand that willpower and programs don't change lifelong hab- its. They miss the essen- tial component for success. What is that component? We have the answer in James 1:21. It says, "There- fore lay aside all filthi- ness and overflow of wick- edness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls." It is God's word deeply rooted in your heart that contains the power you need. It goes beyond reading, or even memorizing to being im- planted through meditat- ing. Do you want to pros- per in everything you do? Psalm 1:2 tells us the an- swer is in delighting in God's word, and meditat- ing in it. Verse 3 explains the life changing benefit. It says, "He shall be like a tree planted by the riv- ers of water that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper." Transforming is the key. It is the same word that describes how a cat- erpillar becomes a butter- fly. Metamorphosis is all God orchestrated. Man has no part but to watch as the cater- pillar spins the cocoon. In- side that dark cocoon, the transforma- tion begins. Through time, we can watch the cocoon break open and a very wet and shriveled butter- fly emerge. Meditating on God's word does that in- ner work of transforming our heart. Have you ever said the wrong thing? Have you ever wished you could re- tract some words that flew out of your mouth and wounded another? Jesus explains a para- ble to His disciples. Mat- thew 15:18-19 says, "But those things which pro- ceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blas- phemies." Matthew 12:34 says, "...For out of the abun- dance of the heart the mouth speaks." The root of our speech comes from our heart. Therefore, to change our speech we have to change our heart. Only God's word has that power. First through sal- vation, then through our daily lives, the Word of God has that power to transform us. Romans 10:9 says, "That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." What our heart believes we speak. When you believe that Je- sus died on the cross for you, you will make that confession in your heart through your mouth. When we accept Jesus' work on the cross for our- selves, we are instantly transformed from death to life, and from dark- ness to light. Romans 6:1-2 tells us how to live victori- ously. It says, "What shall we say then? Shall we con- tinue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it." Dead people have no re- sponse. I encourage you to take the area of your life over which you cannot get vic- tory. Let's say it is an- ger. You begin to medi- tate on these two verses. You speak them over and over and ask the Holy Spirit to help you under- stand their truths. Each time you are tempted to get angry, you immedi- ately say something like this, "How can I, who died to anger, live in it any lon- ger?" Or you could say, "I am dead to anger, there- fore I have no response to this temptation." It is rec- ognizing what your sal- vation means, and apply- ing it to your life, that will give you the power to overcome. MarilynAdamsaccepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in 1958. A debilitating accident in 1977 radically changed her life. Through that crucible of affliction, the Lord wooed her into intimacy, teaching her timeless truths that sustain her, and permeate her teachings. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Vacation Bible School registration open The Associated Press VATICAN CITY Russian President Vladimir Pu- tin will meet with Pope Francis on June 10 at the Vatican, with conflicts in Syria and Ukraine likely to top the Holy See's agenda. Putin last called on Fran- cis on Nov. 25, 2013. The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Thursday the meeting would take place in the af- ternoon of June 10; Putin is expected to visit Russia's pavilion at the Expo world's fair in Milan, where June 10 has been slated as Russia's national day. After nearly a half-cen- tury of hostility between the Vatican and the Krem- lin during the Cold War, a major breakthrough came just after the fall of the Ber- lin Wall in 1989 when the Soviet president, Mikhail Gorbachev, met the Polish- born pontiff, John Paul II. After a 2009 visit by then-President Dmitry Medvedev, Russia and the Holy See upgraded their diplomatic relations to full- fledged ties, with ambassa- dors. Long-running tensions in Russia between Ortho- dox and Catholic faith- ful in Russia prevented Pope Benedict XVI and be- fore him John Paul from achieving their long-sought dreams of a Russian pil- grimage and meeting with the Russian patriarch. Tellingly, Putin didn't invite Francis to visit dur- ing his 2013 visit — one of the few world leaders who have not extended an in- vitation to the enormously popular pope during an audience. Francis has sought to en- list Orthodox leaders in his campaign to condemn at- tacks on Christians by Is- lamic militants in the Mid- dle East. But he has trod lightly with Russia over Ukraine, denouncing the casualties and calling for a cease-fire to hold, but not laying any blame on Mos- cow.
