PAGE 4 TAU TALK Alpha Tau Omega: A Place to Belong A round Christmas, I was in an introspective mood as I usually am at that time. I received the Tau Talk for that month explaining the need for improvements to the ATW house. I reflected on all the good times I had while there and the really good bunch of guys who were in the fraternity. When I went through recruitment week originally, a few houses bid on me but I felt most comfortable with ATW. My first roommate was Chuck Kurth '77, he of the GQ-quality clothes. I was usually wearing a Rolling Stones t-shirt and had long hair. I'm pretty sure they did that to show me how one was supposed to dress and to get me to start listening to funk! When I left high school, I didn't really belong to anything or anyone and was a loner for the most part. After my time at ATW, I felt like I did and do belong and am comfortable in most any setting. I learned valuable lessons there. So, I decided that other young men should have that same opportunity to belong, and that it would make sense to help ATW stay competitive by donating to the cause. Today, I am loan production manager for Evolve Bank and Trust in Tucson, Ariz., and have been handling mortgages for 30 years. I am married to my wife of 20 years, Regan, and have three grown sons from a previous marriage. We enjoy tennis and surfing (I lived in California and Hawaii for numerous years). Fraternally, Craig Simpson '79 Wrapping Up a Successful Spring Semester T he spring semester has been eventful for the undergraduate members of Gamma Upsilon. Our time has been predominantly spent transitioning the new executive officers, focusing on academic improvement, and having a very successful Greek Week. RECRUITMENT The men of Gamma Upsilon have had several successful recruitment events, chief among them the Greek Visit Day at Iowa State. Our recruitment team worked hard to put together a full weekend of events for the prospective new members visiting campus. During the weekend, the chapter hosted many prospective new members at the chapter house. There were events such as a block party, Nerf gun war, catered dinner, house tours, and a Greeks give back philanthropy event. Two new members were signed for the fall '15 class. Overall, the weekend was extremely positive. ACADEMICS IN FOCUS One of the main focuses for the chapter has been on academics. We continue to uphold the high academic standards of Alpha Tau Omega. Based on our past success, we should be eligible for a True Merit award if we surpass the all-men's average at Iowa State this spring. We are optimistic about our academics for the semester and have our sights aimed high. GREEK WEEK 2015 This year, ATW and our partners placed second overall, which is the highest ATW has placed in at least a decade. Much of this was due to donations from you, our extremely supportive and dedicated alumni. This was a fun and extremely successful Greek Week for our chapter. The men of Gamma Upsilon would like to thank each of you, our alumni, for your dedication and support of our chapter. If you are ever in the area, stop by the chapter house. We would love to see you!
