In 1978, he set out to begin his own marketing communications business. The skills he learned in ATW would stick with him throughout his career. "The most important thing that ATW taught me was the ability to connect with people of different backgrounds—learn to get along, work with them, and build rapport. I've used these skills with clients, the media, and superiors alike." Reflecting on these experiences, Larry chose to answer the call from Gamma Upsilon when the opportunity to give back came through the capital campaign. "Fraternities really begin with their property. You've got to have a nice house and present yourself well. The house is going to attract people and then it's up to the guys inside and what they do. I've given to ATW in the past and thought it would be appropriate to do so again. Knowing Bill Gardiner and reading about his challenge was certainly a motivation as well. The whole effort just struck me as a good idea. I've never been sorry that I was an ATW and I think that anything I can do to help improve recruitment will result in a stronger chapter overall." Since 1995, Larry has made his home in Kohler, Wisconsin, not far from his daughter and her family. Larry's wife of 56 years, Bea, passed away in 2010. He can be reached at lthorpe@charter.net.
