IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY PAGE 5 ATW WINS SECOND PLACE IN GREEK WEEK T his year for Greek Week, ATW was paired with Triangle, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Delta Delta Delta. Our pairing walked away with second place overall. This was the highest ATW has placed in at least a decade! We also upset FarmHouse by getting first in Lip Sync and community service. The generous last minute donations that were given by our amazing alumni helped push us over the top. ATW received the award for the male with the highest individual donation total and our pairing raised a total of $28,545 for the Special Olympics of Iowa. In addition, Iowa State set a new record for this event and a national record for the largest fundraising total that the National Special Olympics Foundation has ever received. The total funds raised by the Iowa State Greek Community reached $186,555! Again, a big thank-you to everyone who made a donation. I hope you are as honored and proud as we all are. You will be happy to know that Alpha Tau Omega Gamma Upsilon Chapter has gained the reputation around the Greek community as the chapter that is "really good at fundraising." Although our pairing swept the big events, FarmHouse placed in more events overall and finished first in Greek Week. Our success was a huge breakthrough for Gamma Upsilon and has motivated us to progress in events such as these. These successes have contributed to the fire that is now lit in our eyes and will lead to the rise of ATW at Iowa State University. Gene volunteered for numerous days at various locations around the Des Moines area during the holiday season. Sometimes dressed in a Santa suit but always with a Santa hat and a box of candy canes, Gene was one of the Salvation Army's best bell ringers. The more severe the weather, the more Gene felt challenged to raise the most donations possible. This past holiday season, Michael Nelson '08 suggested we honor Gene's memory by volunteering for a day of bell ringing. This first year, it was just members from the Corporation Board or Board of Trustees who signed up for six hours of bell ringing at a grocery store in West Des Moines. Sally Ehlert, Gene's wife, came over to support our efforts and give us a few tips. We hope to expand our effort next year with the addition of the men in the house.
