When a shooting happens in our small town, during the slow, quiet time of year, it draws a lot of attention on social media. When I promoted Quartzsite Chatter on Facebook in last edition, I knew more folks would be participating, which is great. As evident this weekend, rumors can spread real fast. Saturday a friend of a friend of someone involved posted unconfi rmed information and it was diffi cult to watch the inevitable furvor. Our police department does not have a designated Public Information Offi cer, such Offi cer James Holmes we often see speaking to Phoenix reporters. I recent- ly had the pleasure of attending one of Offi cer Holmes' workshops for law en- forcement. Hearing from the police of- fi cers' points of view was enlightening. I can understand why it takes (what we think is) so long to get information By Shanana "Rain" BearCat out to the public. We live in an instant, we-want-it-now world. Sometimes it's good for us to remember our police of- fi cers are doing the best they can when they must deal with these diffi cult and unusual situations. Journalists and anyone posting infor- mation online should respect the rights of people involved in the news, observe the common standards of decency and stand accountable to the public for the fairness and accuracy of their news reports. Per- sons publicly accused should be given the earliest opportunity to respond. Pledges of confi dentiality to news sources must be honored at all costs, and therefore should not be given lightly. I spent hours upon hours posting online, clarifying rumors, monitoring multiple sites, all while trying to work on this edition you're reading. I do plan on sleeping sometime soon! Ku- dos to QPD for a job well done! Hopefully they will get social media soon, but until then, let's all work together. Needs to be out of sight and mind. Though you feed them at a set time, they will start yowling and stamping their feet, by at least 5 or 10 minutes early. DEADLINE : WED.
