Woods turned in a re- markable performance at the Masters — not so much by previous standards but by recent play. His chipping was shock- ingly bad when he shot 82 in the Phoenix Open to miss the cut by 12 shots, and at Torrey Pines when he withdrew after 11 holes on a cool day because of tightness in his back. Woods stepped away until he could fix his game. At Augusta National, it was as if that was never an issue. He never had a chance to win — not many did the way Jordan Spieth played — and tied for 17th. Woods did not qualify for the Match Play Cham- pionship last week because he has dropped out of the top 100 in the world for the first time since he first came on tour in 1996. And he didn't sound entirely op- timistic about carrying any momentum from the Mas- ters onto a course that has been feast or famine for him through the years. "I'd like to say yes," he said. "I've had some pretty good practice sessions. My short game still feels really good. We made a couple lit- tle swing tweaks since then to keep improving, to keep working on it, to keep get- ting it better, so that part is still a little bit fresh. I'm going to start playing a lit- tle bit more now." Woods won The Players the last time he played in 2013. He missed last year while recovering from back surgery. It was his second victory at TPC Sawgrass. He was a runner-up to Hal Sutton in 2000. But he also has withdrawn twice and has finished out of the top 20 on six other occasions. He has never been a big fan of this Pete Dye de- sign, though he has shown over his career that he can win anywhere if he's play- ing well. "I'm telling you, when you're on, this golf course doesn't seem that hard," Woods said. "You can re- ally go low. You feel like every round you shoot 67 or lower. And then you get days where, 'God, I feel like I can't break 75 here.' It's one of those places. It's very polarizing. You either have it or you don't." Woods will have three weeks off after The Play- ers and then plans a reg- ular summer schedule. He will play every other week starting with the Memorial through the PGA Champi- onship. He was at Saw- grass with swing consul- tant Chris Como. As he has said before, it is a work in progress. "It's certainly coming," he said. "I've made some huge, huge strides since what I was at Torrey and what I was at Phoenix. Huge. ... I'm on the right road. Eventually, it'll click in and I'll have a little run here." If it's the right road, it's a long one. Woods hasn't won since the Bridgestone Invita- tional in August 2013. He hasn't played much since because of back problems that led to surgery, af- ter which he released an- other swing coach. He is No. 125 in the world. He is No. 196 in the FedEx Cup, two spots below John Daly. Rory McIlroy, mean- while, is not expected to arrive until Wednesday. He has taken over in golf by winning four of the last 16 majors, and he is com- ing off another World Golf Championship title at the Match Play. Spieth was playing an 18-hole match with best buddy Justin Thomas, an- other 21-year-old in Daniel Berger and Jimmy Walker. Woods played nine holes, spoke to the media and then retreated to the practice area. There is still work to do. Woods FROM PAGE 1 had hit consecutive jump- ers. Game 3 is Saturday at Washington. Washington had won its first five playoff games, sweeping Toronto before shocking the Hawks 104-98 to start the second round. Even without Wall, the Wizards were competitive in this one until the closing minutes. Paul Pierce hit a 3-pointer and Bradley Beal knocked down another long-range jumper with his foot on the stripe, cut- ting Atlanta's lead to 95-88. But the Hawks closed the game on an 11-2 run, finally putting Washing- ton away. For Carroll, it was his sixth straight game with at least 20 points, giving At- lanta another much-needed offensive lift from its de- fensive stopper. Al Hor- ford and Paul Millsap had 18 points apiece, with Mill- sap grabbing 11 rebounds. Korver finished with 12 points — all from beyond the arc — and reserve Kent Bazemore added 10 points. Beal, playing on a sprained right ankle, had 20 points and seven assists while Pierce and Otto Por- ter had 15 points each. Following the pattern of Game 1, the Hawks built an early double-digit lead but couldn't put away the Wiz- ards. The Hawks had vowed to be more physical and attack the basket, but they settled mostly for jump shots. And unlike Game 1, when there were plenty of open looks, Washing- ton clamped down defen- sively and made things a lot tougher on the perim- eter. The Wizards were down 53-46 at halftime, briefly tied the game in the third period, and trailed just 80- 75 going to the final quar- ter. Wall cheered on ev- ery basket from the bench, hoping the Wizards could pull off an improbable vic- tory without their dynamic star. They couldn't quite fin- ish the job, but they re- turn home for the next two games. Tip-Ins Wizards: The five-game playoff winning streak was the longest in fran- chise history. ... With Wall out, Garrett Temple moved into the rotation. He played about 13 minutes and had two points. ... Nene had another dismal game. Af- ter going scoreless in the opener, he had only two points and four rebounds. ... Marcin Gortat fouled out with 4:26 left. He had 10 points and nine rebounds. Hawks: Atlanta has had a double-digit lead in seven of its games this postseason. The Hawks are 5-2 in those games. ... The Hawks hit only 10 of 29 from 3-point range but again did a good job on the boards, outrebounding the Wizards 44-40. Wizards Ruse While Wall didn't do any work at practice Monday, there was no indication he wouldn't play in Game 2. During his pregame avail- ability, just 90 minutes tipoff, coach Randy Wit- tman said everyone was available and he had not considered sitting out Wall. "The players decide that, how they're feeling, the doctors and all that kind of thing," Wittman said. Then, the inactive list came out — and Wall was on it. The point guard initially thought he had broken his wrist when he fell along the baseline in Game 1. But X-rays were negative, the hand was taped, and Wall finished out a strong game with 18 points and 13 as- sists in nearly 39 minutes of playing time. Hawks FROM PAGE 1 ning streak completely off balance. He needed just 62 pitches to get through six innings, but left the mound in a huff in the eighth af- ter first baseman Ike Da- vis made a throwing error to squander a potential in- ning-ending double play. Brian Dozier followed with a flare off Evan Scrib- ner to get the Twins on the board, but Clippard struck out Hunter and got Joe Mauer to fly out to left field to strand the tying run on third base. The A's got on the board in the first inning thanks in part to a fortuitous bounce. Burns lifted a fly ball down the right-field line and Hunter made a long run and leaped at the wall to try to bring in the third out of the inning. But his left arm hit the wall hard and the ball popped out, and Butler followed with a base hit to right to score Burns. Brett Lawrie drove in the other run for Oakland, a bloop to right off of Brian Duensing in the sixth. Trainer's Room Athletics: Manager Bob Melvin said OF Coco Crisp is closing in on joining the team. He's been on the dis- abled list since April 4 af- ter needing surgery on his right elbow. Crisp was get- ting treatment in Oak- land on Tuesday and Mel- vin said a decision on his return will likely be made on Wednesday. ... LHP Sean Doolittle, who has been on the disabled list since April 4 with a strained left rota- tor cuff, threw 25 pitches in a bullpen. Melvin said he could throw to hitters on Friday in Seattle. Twins: RHP Tim Stauffer (rib strain) has started playing catch, GM Terry Ryan said. Stauffer when on the disabled list on Fri- day. ... RHP Casey Fien (right shoulder strain) has yet to begin throwing.
