GPA Decrease Leads to New Academic Programs As it has always been in Cal Delta, our grades are of the utmost importance as they are tangible reflections of our scholarly core principles. In the fall we achieved a 2.79 chapter-wide GPA, ranking us 12th out of 13 fraternities on campus. This was a .262 GPA decrease from the previous semester, where we ranked first among all fraternities on campus. We have acknowledged that this drop-off is unacceptable, and have thus created a multi-layered program to ensure this number only goes up. Members who do not receive a 3.0 GPA will meet with our standards board and cooperatively come up with ways to increase their GPA. Those members are then placed on an academic tracker, where they must submit monthly grade reports to standards to remain on the right track. Members on the academic tracker are barred from social events at the chapter house until achieving at least a 3.0. It should also be noted that at 114 members, SigEp is the largest fraternity on campus, and our chapter-wide GPA does not reflect the hard work of some of our higher achieving members. Spring Brings 18 New Members We offered 19 bids during spring recruitment with 18 of them accepting. Our vice president of recruitment, Connor Stevens '17, did a spectacular job organizing, planning, and facilitating events. We received a turnout of around 100 prospects, which was fair for a spring class. After intense deliberation, we truly believe we have a great, motivated spring 2015 new member class. Chapter Activities Create Well-Rounded Men Our recent chapter activities have been reflections of ways we are trying to better ourselves as well-rounded college men. At our chapter house we attended How to Sell, a six- hour workshop taught by Nick Wetta '11 that provided valuable information on landing jobs and succeeding in job interviews. In addition, we attended numerous seminars on how we can prevent sexual assault on campus and build a community that supports a safe environment. We have weekly community service opportunities at the San Diego Blood Bank and San Diego's Embrace non-profit organized by Community Service Chairman Drake Thompson '16. Jake Smith '17 has partnered with a religious group on campus that hosts weekly talks on what masculinity is in a fraternity environment, attended by 15 Cal Deltas. This spring, Cal Delta had its first dad's weekend. Our fathers came to the chapter house, barbecued in the back yard, and golfed at the Torrey Pines golf course. Patrick Mulrooney '16 organized the event and the weekend turned out to be a great success. Members Hold High Leadership Positions Connor McCune '14, Max Louie '15, Alex Nelson '15, Matt Alegria '15, Scott Callens '16, and Alex Miller '16 are a part of the San Diego State Mortar Board, the most prestigious senior honor society on campus. Max Louie presides as president of the organization. Keaton Lash '17 and Harrison Baum '17 were recently elected as Associated Students' College of Business representative and College of Arts and Letters representative. Daniel Merrick '15 is the president and founder of the Sports Business Initiative, the first and only sports business program at San Diego State, and is closing out his term as the College of Business president. J. Cole '15 is also closing out his term as the Associated Students president and CEO. Alex Nelson and Connor McCune were recently accepted to the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. Cal Delta Chapter is in a time of reform, improvement, and restructuring to increase chapter longevity, continuation, and prosperity. The executive board and the general chapter are collaborating to make the Cal Delta experience a rewarding and educational one that turns outstanding new members into extraordinary men.
