Page 2 Cal Delta News & Views O n February 28, Gary Romoff '90 again hosted this annual event for SigEps old and new to gather for good food, brotherhood, and Aztec basketball. This time, he brought a good friend, Marty Laughlin '95, to assist. Together, with some great assistance from undergraduate guacamole mixers, salsa blenders, and servers, everyone enjoyed a great meal and some fine fellowship. The food, as always, was fantastic. The basketball game didn't turn out to be very good. Boise State got the Aztecs again, even on our home court. The weather was cold but not rainy. The turnout wasn't as strong as all hoped, mostly due to the threat of heavy rain. In some measures it might not have been viewed as one of the better ones, but not for this author. Here is why. As can happen when reunion events take place, you sometimes just don't know who will happen to show up. Bill '59 and Bob Hartin attended, which was the first time for them to come to a local event, maybe since each left SDSU in the early '60s. I didn't know them then, as my time in the chapter came a little later. But, on this day, we met and talked about those old times and I discovered that younger brother Bob and I worked with the City of San Diego lifeguard service at the same time and remembered each other from those times. I really enjoyed getting to share with Bob some memories about mutual friends, coworkers, and interesting times. I hope that Gary and Marty, the chapter, and our local Alumni and Volunteer Corporation can continue to host this cool event. If you come next February, who knows what new/old friends you may meet, maybe even for the first time? Thanks, Gary and Marty, for without your loyalty and generosity to Cal Delta, the flood of memories for me might not have happened. Fraternally, Ron Smith '69 Annual Alumni Barbecue Unites Old and New Friends A SDSU student ID card from the early '60s was shared at the alumni barbecue and basketball game. Simple connections run deep in our memories. T he moment Todd Costa '04 went through his first SigEp ritual, he knew he was where he belonged. "Something about the ritual itself spoke to me and I knew I had to not just be a part of it, but lead it." Todd became a SigEp leader by guiding both Cal Delta and Cal Beta Beta through the re-chartering process. After transferring from the University of San Diego, Todd found Cal Delta in the midst of its re-chartering process, an experience he had just been through at Cal Beta Beta. "Having gone through the chartering process, I felt obligated to lend my experience to brothers at Cal Delta." Todd was proud to lead Cal Delta as chapter president. "I had the satisfaction of knowing that I was a part of the emerging leaders of the SDSU Greek system, as well as part of an organization that is a national leader." The re-chartering process gave Todd many opportunities to learn and be involved with Cal Delta alumni. "During my time with SigEp, I was able to learn many lessons about decision making, leadership, personal and professional relationships, and, most importantly, integrity. The events and challenges encountered during my time with SigEp helped to forge the key values by which I subscribe to today." Todd knows alumni such as Skip Dahlkamp '64, Bob Gibbs '63, Ron Smith '69, Bob Trovaten '67, Dann Whalen '69, and Dale Walters '69 had immense impacts on the chapter during recolonization. "I know personally, Ron Smith had a major impact on me. We shared a lot of similar experiences both inside and outside the chapter and I know for a fact I am a better man because of the examples and lessons I received from him." Todd's experience as chapter president has shaped his decision making and led him to where he is today. He works as a registered nurse in the emergency department at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and the Disneyland Resort. While a busy career and family life have kept Todd from staying involved with the chapter today, SigEp will always hold an important place in Todd's life. Todd lives in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, with his wife, Michelle, and their children, Courtney (3) and newborn Kyle. He can be reached via e-mail at sigepfox@yahoo.com.
