St. Elizabeth Communi- ty Hospital presented the 2011 grant recipient awards during the December St. Elizabeth Advisory Council Meeting. The grant award oppor- tunity was announced earli- er this year and is a part of the annual Catholic Health- care West Community Grant funding program for all eligible non profit 501(c)3 organizations. Sr. Pat Manoli, senior director of Mission Integra- tion, presented the grant awards to Family Services Agency, Girls Inc. and Northern Valley Catholic Social Service. During the presentation, each recipient presented a brief overview of their project. The three projects fund- ed included Family Services Agency, family counseling services to families at or below poverty level, North- ern Valley Catholic Social Service Family Resource Center family nutrition courses and Girls Inc. sub- stance abuse reduction pro- grams for adolescent girls and boys. =The total grant amount divided among the recipients was $38,098. The selection commit- tee, comprised of St. Eliza- beth Advisory Council members and community members at large, reviewed seven letters of intent with a total ask amount of $111,837. Five of these requests were invited to submit proposals and the three finalists were selected. "I appreciate the insight and evaluation of the selec- tion committee who decides on the recipients of these grant dollars," Manoli said. "Each program select- ed directly relates to the top health concerns of our com- munity. As stewards of our dollars and in support of our mission, we are confi- dent that these programs have a meaningful impact on the needs of our commu- nity." Every CHW hospital conducts a community health assessment and has identified strategic priorities based on the assessment outcome. St. Elizabeth invests in this survey every three years; the most recent survey was published earlier this year. The top health concerns and behaviors revealed in the survey include Obesity, Drug and Alcohol Abuse and Mental Health. The objectives of the grants program include focusing on disproportion- ate health-related unmet needs of the community, emphasizing primary pre- vention and addressing underlying causes of health problems, contributing to a seamless continuum of care, building community capaci- ty and emphasizing collabo- ration.
