Lady Spartans top Shasta in OT for 3rd place HOLIDAY CLASSIC OVERTIME 40 Red Bluf 47f Shasta By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor The Lady Spartans took another step toward re-establishing them- selves in the Northern Section, Sat- urday, with a 47-40 overtime win against Shasta to claim third place at the Red Bluff Holiday Classic. Red Bluff's defense stepped up with more than enough steals in the extra frame and converted just enough free throws to knock off their rivals from the north. The 3-3 Lady Spartans have already grabbed wins over Shasta and league-foe Lassen to start their season. "For us it gives us a lot of confi- dence going into league that we can compete with anyone on the floor," coach Kathy Brandt said. The Lady Spartans used a 21-12 third quarter to grab the lead against Shasta as Ashley Brown came off the bench to give an 8- point spark for Red Bluff. A technical foul on Shasta's coach early in the fourth quarter led to Mariah Smith sinking a pair of free throws to put Red Bluff up 34-27. Shasta would fight back as Danielle Chabolla would hit a pair of runners down the stretch includ- ing the game tying basket with 10 seconds left to force overtime at 38-38. With the momentum on Shas- ta's side, the Wolves won the over- time tip and Riley Murphy quickly converted a bucket. However, it would be the only points Shasta would score during the extra time. Lottie Jones, who battled foul trouble throughout the game scored six points in the extra frame Turnovers doom Spartans and Jessica Macdonald, Cori Schatz and Alex Dahnke all made strong defensive plays for Red Bluff. Schatz led Red Bluff with 13 points. Jones finished with nine. Macdonald pulled down 10 rebounds to go with five points. Smith, had a solid game running the Spartans' offense and finished with six points. Alana Hinkston, Rachel Ward and Dahnke each had a bucket. Sarah Brown gave some solid minutes off the bench to help offset Jones' foul trouble. The Lady Spartans travel to the West Coast Jamboree in Antioch Dec. 28. Lions rally to stun Raiders OAKLAND (AP) — Ndamukong Suh provided the perfect exclamation point to the Detroit Lions' thrilling comeback in his return from a two-game suspension. Matthew Stafford threw a 6-yard TD pass to Calvin Johnson with 39 seconds remaining to cap a 98-yard scoring drive and Suh blocked a 65-yard field goal attempt by Sebastian Janikowski to seal the Lions' 28- 27 win over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. The Raiders (7-7) appeared in control of the game when Aaron Curry returned a fumble 6 yards for a touchdown to make it 27-14 with 7:47 remaining. But Stafford engineered two long scoring drives in American Christian 40 30 Daily News photo by Rich Greene Red Bluff's Curtis Twitchell drives to the basket, Saturday. HOLIDAY CLASSIC Enterprise 75 Red Bluf 51f By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor Everything was rolling along just fine for the Spar- tans. Then one-by-one the wheels fell off and eventual- ly it caught up. Enterprise used a 25-0 run to blow past the Spartans 75-51, Saturday, in the boys Holiday Classic third place game. Red Bluff seemed to have their rivals where they wanted them even after their scoring leader Jonah McIn- nis fell awkwardly and left the game to start the second quarter. Taylor Blaser and Mitch Robison would fire back-to- back 3-pointers to put Red Bluff up 27-18. Then Blaser picked up his third foul with four min- utes left in the first half. Although Red Bluff's top two scoring threats were on the bench it took a few min- utes before it caught up with the Spartans. Curtis Twitchell converted an and- one bucket and free throw to give Red Bluff a 33-26 lead. The Spartans would be stuck on 33 for a long time. Enterprise would score the next 25 points and even after McInnis returned to start the third quarter the bleeding wouldn't stop. Blaser picked up his fourth foul just 20 seconds into the third quarter and went back to the bench as Enterprise took advantage of numerous Spartan turnovers. Red Bluff coach Stan Twitchell eventually rolled the dice and put Blaser back into the game midway though the third quarter, but it was too late. Enterprise had done all the damage they needed to. The teams combined to shoot 59 free throws in the game. Red Bluff shot 15- for-22 from the line. McInnis and Blaser each had 13 points. Robison fin- ished with 10. Lucas Burns and Twitchell had four. Evan Sinclair and Jake Avila had three points. Mike Nichols had a point. Enterprise's Kaelan Crisosto scored 20 points. the final minutes to give the Lions (9-5) their first lead of the game and Suh ended it when he got his hand on Janikowski's field goal attempt. Suh threw his helmet and ran down the field in cele- bration, providing a loud finish to an otherwise quiet day for the defensive tackle in his first game back since serving a suspension for stepping on the right arm of Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Evan Dietrich- Smith during a loss on Thanksgiving. Until that point, the day belonged to Stafford and Johnson, who helped give the Lions a stunning victory and hand the Raiders (7-7) a crushing third straight loss to damage their playoff aspirations. Stafford completed 29 of 52 passes for four touch- downs. He completed nine for 214 yards to Johnson, including a 21-yarder and a 48-yarder on the winning drive that started at the Detroit 2 with 2:14 to play and the Lions out of timeouts. They also connected on a 51-yard scoring play in the first quarter but they had to sweat out the closing sec- onds as Carson Palmer got the Raiders to the Detroit 47 with 4 seconds to play. Janikowski, who tied the record with a 63-yarder in the season opener at Denver, couldn't get the ball past the line as Suh blocked it to end the game. Palmer finished 32 for 40 for 367 yards and a touch- down to Darrius Heyward-Bey, who had eight catches for a career-high 155 yards. But Palmer also slightly overthrew Chaz Schilens on See RAIDERS, page 2B 40 59 Sports 1B Monday December 19, 2011 Extra effort
