That trait proved helpful as Red Bluff held off a relentless Central Valley Lady Falcons squad 51-46 in the opening round of the 2011 Red Bluff Holiday Classic. Red Bluff had taken a 29-21 lead into the locker room as they jumped into the Falcons' passing lanes on defense and drove to the bucket with determination on offense. That lead would evaporate in the third quarter to just two points as Central Valley's Michalle O'Farrell turned in 10 of her game high 17 points in the period. HOLIDAY CLASSIC Central Valley 46 Red Bluf 51f But each time the lead was trimmed to two points, the Lady Spartans responded. First it was Lottie Jones putting in a field goal as part of her 8-point, 6-rebound perfor- mance. The next time it was Alex Dahnke dishing to a streaking Ashley Brown for another bucket. Red Bluff eventually stretched their lead back out to 44-35 after Jones stole the ball from O'Farrell in the backcourt and put it in for an easy layup. However the Falcons didn't go quietly and they capitalized on a couple of Red Bluff mental errors in the waning minutes. Brianne Schlapia hit a 3-pointer and was fouled to make it 46-41. Thirty seconds later Central Valley's Heather Jacop was fouled on a missed Red Bluff free throw. Jacop converted both of her attempts to cut the score to 46-43. Dahnke then drove the length of the floor to break the Falcons' press and found Alana Hinkston for another Red Bluff score. Central Valley responded again when O'Farrell pulled down one of her 12 rebounds and was fouled going up for the putback. She made one of her attempts to cut the lead back to four points. Red Bluff then made another mistake being called for a foul, reaching for a steal with just 31 seconds and sent the Falcons to the line again for a double bonus. The Spartans would survive however as both free throws were missed and Jones was fouled rebounding for Red Bluff. Jones hit one free throw to push the score to 49-44. Central Valley missed a shot with 10 sec- onds left, but the Spartans turned the ball back over into the hands of O'Farrell who cut the score to 49-46 with just six seconds remaining. Central Valley was forced to foul Cori Schatz, who calmly drained both free throws to cap her 11-point night and finally cement the game for Red Bluff. Jessica Macdonald finished with eight points and five rebounds for Red Bluff. Dahnke had six points. Brown had five points and Mariah Smith had four points as both guards played strong games defensively. Krista Rodriguez added a bucket for the Lady Spartans, who are 2-2 on the season. Shasta buried seven 3-pointers, including it's first four buckets of the game and held off a late surge from Corning, Wednesday, for a 45-37 win in the opening round of the 2011 Red Bluff Holiday Classic. Corning looked strong for most of the game, but a lack of scoring in the second period cost the Cardinals, who found themselves facing a 16- point deficit in the second half. In the fourth quarter the Cardi- nals got their offense rolling again behind Karlie Jennings, who fin- ished with a game-high 14 points. It would be too late. The Lady Wolves had already done all the damage as five different Shasta players connected on 3- pointers in the game. Riley Murphy had all of her team-high 10 points in the first half, including a pair of triples. Lauren Crosby added two more 3-pointers and Alexis Camp, Kate- lyn Brown and Danielle Chabaolla also connected from long range for Shasta. Marisa Vinson had a strong game running the point for Corning and finished with eight points.
