The North Valley Art League's 2015 Interna- tional Juried Photogra- phy Show is scheduled for April 28 through May 30 at the Carter House Gal- lery, 48 Quartz Hill Road in Caldwell Park, Redding and will feature award- winning photography from around the world and the United States. Artists from Red Bluff included in the exhibit are Steve Arrison, Clare Jones- Carbonell, Bob Grace, Bar- bara Luzzadder, Jona- than Neal, Bruce Perkin, Joel Reinhard and Adam Wyman. Photographic images featuring 15 international artists and many from around the U.S. were se- lected from more than 1,000 entries by show ju- ror Thom Sempere, exec- utive director of PhotoAl- liance in San Francisco, a non-profit dedicated to supporting contemporary photography. He is a visit- ing faculty member at the San Francisco Art Insti- tute as well as a lecturer in the Continuing Studies program at Stanford Uni- versity, teaching photogra- phy. His photographs are in the permanent collec- tion at SFMOMA and have been exhibited in venues across the United States as well as in China. Many of the works in the exhibit are from award-winning artists. In- ternational award winners include Helene Barrette from Canada, Lara Bobbio from Italy, Brut Carniol- lus from Slovenia, Goran Jovic from Croatia, Mat- thew Emmett and Gillian Hyland from the United Kingdom, and Adam Tan from Malaysia. Among the many award winners from the U.S. are Jack Curran, Ron Dell-Aquila, Michael Elliott-Smith, J.M. Gold- ing, Susan Griffith, George Grubb, Richard Hricko, Sarah-Marie Land, Laszlo Perlaky and Michael Sti- mola. Quite of few North State photographers are award winners as well. Artists from Redding in the ex- hibit include Mike An- drews, Rachael Arthur, Jim Canter, Michelle Do- mondon, Michael Eich- wald, Dennis Halkides, Terry Hankins, Sandi Howell, Bob Small and Su- san Tangeman. Other local artists whose work is being ex- hibited are Doug Davis, Shelley Edwards, and Stephanie Luke from Cot- tonwood, David Gendron from Lake California, Fritz Carlson from Palo Cedro, Linda Kay Isbell of Bur- ney and Andrea Penners of Shingletown. Exhibitors from the Chico area are Leslie Wilkinson of Chico, Gary Wagner from Paradise. North Coast artists are Stilson Snow from Eureka and Mary Ann Machi from Fields Landing. Oregon artists are Geri Mathew- son from Ashland, and David Winston of Talent, Oregon. A reception, which is open to the public, will be held 6-8 p.m. Satur- day, May 2 at the gallery. Awards will be announced at the reception and Sem- pere will give a short talk explaining why he chose each of the award win- ners. Hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be served. PHOTOGRAPHY Local artists to exhibit in Redding show The North State Sym- phony's year-long journey in search for a new con- ductor and music director approaches its final desti- nation. The Symphony's fi- nal concert of the season, called "Arrive!," will be played at 7:30 p.m. May 9 in Redding's Cascade The- atre, and at 2 p.m. May 10 in Laxson Auditorium, CSU Chico, Peter Jaffe, music direc- tor of the Stockton and Au- burn symphonies, takes the podium as the last of four finalists who hope to per- manently lead the only pro- fessional classical orchestra in the region. Jaffe has led the Stock- ton Symphony for many years, and has extensive na- tional and international ex- perience as conductor and violinist. He is especially known for the imaginative con- certs he has designed. Jaffe's program with North State Symphony covers a broad spectrum of orchestral music. In both Redding and Chico. Beethoven's Piano Con- certo No. 3 will be played by Dr. Natalya Shkoda. Shkoda hails from the Ukraine, has concertized and taught extensively in Europe and the U.S. She is currently on the faculty at California State University, Chico. The Beethoven work con- trasts with two very differ- ent selections on the con- cert. George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess Selections for orchestra will open the concert in a version ar- ranged by Robert Russell Bennett. The 19th century and Russia are the sources of Pictures at an Exhibition, by composer Modest Mus- sorgski, which paints pic- tures in sound and ends with a triumphant march, called "The Great Gate of Kiev," which is counted among the most powerful and popular selections in the field. Audience members may hear Jaffe speak an hour prior to the concerts. As part of the Search process, he will be in the North State for the entire week preced- ing the concerts, making several public appearances. NORTH STATE SYMPHONY Concert to showcase conductor, pianist "Simply Sinatra" is a dazzling remembrance of the hit songs that define the legend of old blue eyes. Steve Lippia will front a live big band in this full- throttle performance of classic American reper- toire at the Cascade The- atre at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30. Shasta Live Board Mem- bers plan to celebrate this special evening with Steve Lippia: "Simply Sinatra" by wearing black tie attire. Organizers invite the au- dience to dress up, if they wish. Steve Lippia's vocal skills have established his widespread notoriety at corporate events and with symphony orchestras, ca- sinos and performing arts centers across the coun- try. Originally moonlight- ing with local bands in Florida, the undeniable likeness to Sinatra's style steered Lippia into a new, unexpected career. Localized fame spread to the national scene when he landed the vocalist spot with the Woody Herman Band, a position once oc- cupied by his mother. He has recorded an album for Warner Brothers' Studios, and two live CDs: "Steve Lippia Live," and Grammy- nominated "Steve Lippia in Concert."
