When Linda Payne Smith '74 looks back on college, memories of Pi Beta Phi come flooding back. She joined Pi Phi when she was a sophomore. Her mother, Nancy Reed Payne '51, had been a Cal Gamma Pi Phi before her and most of her dorm friends were already Pi Phi pledges. From the moment she walked into the Chapter House, she felt like she was among friends. Linda says that having her mother at her initiation, the first held in the new house, was very special. Linda was among the first to live at 667 West 28th Street and recalls how the girls would sneak into the kitchen at night to raid the pantry. Serving as Chapter president was another significant experience for Linda. "Working with the Executive Committee, leading Chapter meet- ings, and working with House Corporation—all were great learning experiences for me in business later in life. I fondly remember the fun, too—Monday night Chapter dinner and meetings, excitement over pin- nings, new pledges, and changes made to the house each year. It was all a fabulous experience." As an alumna, Linda has remained supportive of the Chapter that has meant so much to her. "Pi Phi gave me so many wonderful experiences, so many fantastic friends, and the opportunity to grow as an individual. How can I ever pay that back?" That is the reason why Linda has given to the campaign every year since it began in 2007. For her, it is about the future Pi Phi sisters and ensuring that they get the wonderful experience at Cal Gamma. She has loved being able to give back to the Chapter and encourages others to do the same. "Whether you volunteer time or contribute financially, it is so important to continue the legacy of Cal Gamma Pi Beta Phi." She has enjoyed a long and successful career, first running large divisions for banks and trust companies and is now operating as vice president of marketing and community development for Saint Alphonsus Health System in southwest Idaho and eastern Oregon. Linda and her husband, Jeff, live in Boise, Idaho. They have two sons, CJ (24) and Spencer (17). CJ graduated from USC's Viterbi School of Engineering and is living in Scottsdale, Arizona, working for Honeywell Aerospace as a mechanical engineer. Spencer is a high school junior and played on the John Newcombe Academy touring tennis team throughout England and Scotland last summer. Linda has served as president of the Boise Public Schools Education Foundation, the Idaho Humane Society board, the Regence Caring Foundation Board, and many other organizations in her community. Linda can be contacted at lindpayn@sarmc.org.
