On December 5, motorcyclists from the Fayetteville area will gather
on motorcycles of all descriptions with toys of all shapes and sizes.
They will be on a mission to provide toys for less fortunate children
through the work of the Fayetteville Urban Ministry.
Over 500 bikes participated in the event last year, and organizers
expect this year's 30th Annual Wingmen M.C. Toy Run to be even big-
ger. Bikes will gather at 1 p.m. at Cape Fear Harley-Davidson and will
depart with Santa at 2 p.m. on an escorted run to the collection point
at Last Call Sports Bar.
Admission is one new toy and all proceeds go to the Fayetteville
Urban Ministries, which has
been the recipient of the event
for over a decade. Toys can
be donated at the start or end
location.
"They help a wide
swap of people," said Bill
Weatherell, a Wingmen
MC member. "They are a
community-based organiza-
tion that's well known, and
it helps for a better crowd
showing up."
Participants in the
oldest and largest toy
run can also expect door
prizes, a 50/50 drawing
and raffle, music, food
and spirits.
"The event has grown from a pickup-truck-load to a bus-load for
the local children," said Weatherell.
The Wingmen Motorcycle Club started in Italy with a bunch of
young guys on motorcycles with the 509th Airborne Infantry. They
were reassigned to Fort Bragg in 1979. The group has now grown to
17 Chapters in North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri,
New York and New Jersey. Fayetteville's group is the oldest chapter.
"Each chapter is unique but solid as a rock through our many mili-
tary connections and bases," said Weatherell, who is retired from the
U.S. Army. "They all are doing good things in each community they
reside."
The toy run will be held rain or shine. Those not riding can drop
off toys the day or the event at the start or finish points. For more
information, contact Bill Weatherell at 910-261-4660.
