p. 2 The DePauw Phi T he men of Indiana Zeta have had a wonderful semester. Academically, Phis performed very well, coming in third in fall semester grade standings, which was above the all-fraternity and all-men's averages. Our members continue to be academically involved by way of management fellows, ITAP students, media fellows, honors scholars, bonner scholars, and environmental fellows. Multiple brothers are involved in varsity athletics, including basketball, football, soccer, tennis, lacrosse, swimming, and baseball. Collin Henry '15 is the captain of the baseball team and Chris Bertolini '15 is captain of the tennis team. Many members of the new member class are also engaged in athletics. Upcoming philanthropic events include Relay for Life, Special Olympics, and our own Strikes and Steals for ALS. In the fall, many Phis participated in DePauw Dance Marathon, raising money for Riley Children's Hospital. Sophomore John Daseke '17 is a member of Dance Marathon's executive committee. Phi Delta Theta has pushed to become more involved in the Greek community with two members on the Interfraternity Council executive committee and multiple Order of Omega honorees. Our own Mitch Brown '16 released his album, Ear to Ear, last summer and spent much of the fall working on another set of songs called KEYS. This has been an exciting spring semester as we welcome phikeia into the Chapter and make a push in campus involvement and academics. Your undergraduate brothers are very thankful for your support of the Chapter. Fraternally, John Daseke '17 Alumni Secretary B e ambitious. Ask questions. Be curious. Keep your priorities straight, your mind right, and your head up. Do what you love, and love what you do. "Forget about this life's too short business. I've learned life's too long to be doing anything you're not completely passionate about," says John Feld '84. "One of the most important things in life is to have a dream. Fulfill that dream and repeat." One of John's first jobs after graduating from DePauw was working for the CBS soap opera Guiding Light in New York City, which he said fostered his creativity in a fast-paced working environment. Today John works as the vice president of programming for Scripps Networks Interactive in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he develops television projects for three cable networks: HGTV, DIY Network, and Great American Country. After years of dedication to the production industry, John's hard work paid off as he won an Emmy Award for his work on the Martha Stewart Show. "The time I've now spent with Scripps Networks has been as fulfilling as anything I've done. I enjoy discovering new talent and helping to foster new ideas. I also enjoy spending as much time as I can in New York and Los Angeles." Looking back at his collegiate experience John encourages undergraduates to slow down and appreciate each moment as they come. "Whenever I speak to college students I tell them I've got some good news and some bad news. Good news: you're in the middle of one of the best times of your lives. Bad news: you won't realize it for a few years," he says. While John's Phi Delta Theta memories are endless, he admits that his most cherished memory is the start of school bash each year; although he remarks that being surrounded by brothers while cooking in the courtyard would be an experience that tops the list. "I think about my time at Indiana Zeta often. Whether I see them regularly or not, there's truly a bond that exists with my special group of Phis that I'll carry with me forever." After all, it's not every day you're thrown into a house with 70 strangers, where, after four years of unrelenting camaraderie, you come out the other end with invaluable life experience. John and his wife, Leigh, who graduated from DePauw in 1992, live in Franklin, Tennessee, with their three sons: Ben (18), Noah (15), and Owen (12). John prides himself on being a family man, which is why his hobbies have come to evolve around his sons. Coaching all three sons in youth basketball over the last 10 years have been some of his pastimes, but when he's not spending time with his family or in the community he says, "I love music and have been known to write a song or two."
