But the primary reason we're choosing Zelei was his dedication to balancing winning with getting as many players involved as he could. Just two players, Steven Rodriguez and Isaac Williams, return from a Warriors team that for the second consecutive spring marched through the Division-VI playoffs and to a title in Chico. A season ago Rodriguez showed he had the potential to move into the role as Mercy's primary scoring threat and Williams progressed all year long with his intensity under the boards. But those two will need help. "The last couple of years you could almost throw the ball out and let Mitchell coach, he could do it himself — even Jeremie — they had a pretty good cast around them," Shellabarger said. "This time we're a little short in experience, but we'll Sports Schedule Non tournament games tip off at around 7:30 p.m. Dec 1-3...at Block LM Tourney Dec 8-10......at Trinity Tourney W Dec 14.............vs Westwood Dec 16-17...at P.C. As the thousands who have learned under Shellabarger know, the hard work he speaks of starts on the defensive side of the floor and that's what he points to in regards to where this group of Warriors need to improve. "Defense is a consistent thing. It shows up every time you go out to play," Shellabarger said. "Offense can be like a tide sometimes cause it comes and goes, but defense it always shows up." While the 2011 seniors aren't on the roster anymore, they're still around in more ways than one. Lopez had dropped by practice Tuesday to lend his knowledge. And even when they aren't their in person the most recent class has left lessons with Rodriguez and Williams on how to be a winner. "The pace we need to play if we want to be a championship team and the defense we need to play," Rodriguez said on what he had learned as an underclassmen. The Warriors once again embark on a difficult schedule, playing up against several Division-IV and V teams before they hope hitting the playoffs. "Our schedule lends itself to us getting better," Shellabarger. "It's the same this year, our schedule is tough, our league is tough, it just prepares us for the end." The past two years, the season couldn't have ended better. #25 Harlow Johnson 5-8 W/PG Junior #32 Isaac Williams 6-2 P Senior #33 Brenten James 5-7 W Sophomore #35 Mark Zunter 5-6 W Junior #3 Steven Rodriguez 6-1 W/PG Senior #12 Tommy Garcia 6-0 W/PG Sophomore 1B Wednesday November 30, 2011 Hoops Preview Mercy Warriors #15 Jose Alvarez 5-10 W Junior #22 Nick Feser 6-1 P Junior
