Our Urgent Need " I am involved because eta has given back to me over the years more than I could ever repay. Our chapter has remained strong and there is a huge need for the renovation as the chapter size has more than doubled since the lodge was first built. e girls in our chapter deserve a space where they can thrive and grow. -Melody Hiatt Kramer '68 " Le: Our original lodge, destroyed by the 1970 tornado. Right: Our 1971-2014 lodge at #19 Greek Circle. PRESERVING OUR LEGACY Kappa Alpha eta's importance to Texas Tech University must not be understated. Membership in the Gamma Phi Chapter helps create a support system and deeper connection to Texas Tech by providing a sense of belonging and community within the university campus. Additionally, with an increase of women going through recruitment at Texas Tech each year, our lodge can no longer adequately accommodate our members and potential new members during events. Space is limited, and this not only impacts recruitment, but also creates a challenge to accommodate members for weekly chapter meetings and for appropriate storage of recruitment, ritual and archival materials. SETTING THETA APART Recently, other sororities at Texas Tech University have responded to their aging facilities' needs and the increased competition in recruiting ever-larger numbers of young women each year by investing or planning to invest millions of dollars toward substantially upgrading their facilities, including Alpha Phi, Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, and Zeta Tau Alpha. In addition, Alpha Xi Delta has been invited to colonize on the Texas Tech campus in fall 2015. e Texas Tech Greek system remains strong. In the face of this environment and financial commitment of other chapters on campus, we cannot allow eta to be le behind. KEEPING OUR SISTERS SAFE e safety of our 250 collegiate members is of utmost importance to the Gamma Phi Facility Corporation Board. Challenges with an outdated kitchen, HVAC units, and an inadequate number of bathrooms, coupled with limited square footage, have caused the Facility Corporation Board to explore a major construction project to address these needs and ensure the safety of our members. We must offer a structurally sound and safe lodge by updating the electrical wiring and adding a fire sprinkler system along with making our lodge ADA-compliant. Much like our personal homes, our lodge must be a safe haven that instills confidence in our members and their parents. #19 GREEK CIRCLE B uilt in 1971, #19 Greek Circle has been a part of Gamma Phi's legacy for more than 40 years. It has become clear that we must make a major investment in our lodge if we are to remain competitive among the other sorority chapters on the Texas Tech campus, provide a quality meeting and study environment for all of our members, and otherwise support our collegiate sisters.
