2A Daily News – Friday, November 25, 2011 Community people&events Bidwell Park observatory turns 10 CHICO — The 10th anniversary of the Kiwanis Chico Community Observatory in Bid- well Park was celebrated Nov. 18-19 with an astronomy film festival and fundraiser. Six documentaries were shown over the two days during the Starlight Film Festival in Sier- ra Nevada Brewing Co.'s Big Room. Astronomers and filmmakers spoke. Funds raised during the event will help with the observatory's maintenance. The observato- ry, located next to Horseshoe Lake, was built with the help of Chico Kiwanis Club, and is now operated by the nonprofit Pacific Center for Astronomical Outreach Inc. Since its opening, more than 100,000 indi- viduals have enjoyed the free use of the facili- ty, according to founders. For the film festival, five Public Broadcast- ing System documentaries were shown over the two days: "Hubble's Amazing Rescue," "Tele- scope: Hunting the Edge of Space," "Seeing in the Dark," "Journey to Palomar," and "400 Years of the Telescope." The latter is the locally produced documen- tary by Kris Koenig and Anita Ingrao of Chico. PBS just released the five films in a DVD collection titled "Stargazing.". Steven Beckwith, vice president of research at University of California and past director of Hubble Space Telescope Science Institution, and Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute, spoke about current astronomical research. The film "Black Sky," which follows Burt Rutan's quest to win the Ansari X prize as the first commercial space flight, was presented, followed by a program by Brian Binnie, Space- ShipOne astronaut, the first commercial astro- naut that flew the winning flight. COMMUNITY CLIPS Scholarships receive community support By Lorna Bonham Red Bluff Garden Club Scholarship Chairwoman With the support of the community, high school scholarships totaling over three thousand dollars were given by Red Bluff Garden Club to three Tehama County high school students who are now attending the colleges of their choice. Red Bluff Garden Club created beautiful wreaths and arrangements from all fresh plant material. The community purchased these items at the 2010 Scholar- ship Christmas Boutique providing the funds for the 2011 scholarship. This years event will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 8, 9 and 10 in the former Holiday Market building on the corner of Cedar and Madison streets. The recipients of the 2011 scholarships were Kath- leen Parks, Francis Ocampo and Derek Wais. Scholarship recipient Kathleen Parks, the daughter of Howard and Erzsebet Parks, was a student of Red Bluff Union High School and now attends California Polytechnic State University. She has been an active part of 4-H, raised a herd of dairy goats, completed gar- dening projects, and was a member of the 2011 4-H All Star Team. Frances Ocampo, the daughter of Abelina and Ale- jandro Ocampo, was a student of Los Molinos High School and is now attending College of Saint Mary, Omaha. She was active in both sports, and Future Farmers of America. She won all star awards in both basketball and volleyball, raised a hog for FFA and was selected to be a Girls State Delegate. Derek Wais, the son of Gloria Gonzales, was a stu- dent at Corning Union High School and is now attend- ing Butte College. Derek was a participant in Future Farmers of America and the hogs he raised won grand- champion more than one year.
