Wednesday, November 23, 2011 – Daily News 5B Young Marines celebrating another successful year By JOHNMINTON Special to the DN The Tehama County Young Marines were first chartered in October 2005, but it took nearly one year to receive the charter from Washington, D. C. Since then adults and youth have come and gone. It's been said that, "Youth programs are tran- sient in nature." In Young Marine units, battal- ions and regiments across the nation, commanders and Execu- tive Officers (XOs) are elected every other year on even years. National by-laws require this. Also, special elections may be called for if a commander or XO leaves the unit, battalion or regi- ment for any reason. I've been very proud to have been leading our local unit and battalion (nine units from Frazier Mountain to Lassen County). It's been very demanding but equally tremendously rewarding. But I called for a special unit election because I feel the unit is ready for another commander. I'll still be the Ray Jacobs (1st) Battalion Commander until elec- tions in July. So far it looks as though I will remain in that posi- tion for at least another two years. There's just no way I could ever leave this program or PAL either. To say both of these programs have been a labor of love is to put it mildly. It's been my passion and I feel quite lucky and fortunate that these kids even allow me or any adult into their world. It's a great relationship. "Every child Here are some of the ways people can make a difference daily: • AARP/IRS, under their Tax-Aide Program is seeking local volunteers to assist Tehama and Glenn county residents with state and federal tax prepara- tion. Bilingual volunteers needs a healthy adult in their life." A few months ago we had a parent join our Young Marine Registered Adult Staff and as I observed him I began to seriously consider stepping aside so new blood and new thoughts and ideas could be encouraged. This man's name is Jaime Crane. I feel I have asked the right per- son to step up like this. He was voted in as of Nov. 8, but his term will take affect on January 1, 2012 and he will run for re-election in July (I hope). Again, as these non-profit youth organizations are transient in nature, there have been quite a number of adults who have stepped up and stepped into vari- ous roles with this unit. Everyone brought something good to the Young Marine table. It is a very demanding "job" and our volun- teer youth advocates are only serv- ing part-time and with other com- mitments in life; it's not easy. There's only so much a volunteer can give. Currently we have the best team of adults and parents that we have ever had at any one time. Everyone does bring something special into the unit. We all also have our own weaknesses and issues which aren't understood by others too many times. Volun- teerism is a special vocation and it isn't for everybody. Crane has not served in the Marine Corps or military but has the necessary leadership abilities and traits to do this job effectively. So does our current XO, Mrs. D‚Lorah Hurton, who also has not are also needed. They accept and train volun- teers between October and December. Volunteers are asked to give a minimum commitment of four hours per week between Feb. 1 and April 15. Expenses are reimbursed on a limit- ed basis. Information from 'To say both of these programs have been a labor of love is to put it mildly.' served in the military. She is Mary Hurton's mom. Mary "retired"‚ out of the program a few months ago as the Ray Jacobs (1st) Battal- ion first Sergeant Major. Mary won several national awards and honors. She is now attending Cedarville Christian University in Ohio. I asked Mrs. Hurton almost a year ago to step into the XOs spot and she accepted. She was voted in unanimously. The remainder of the Registered Adult Staff and Parent Support Group are doing a wonderful job of administering and accounting for everything, getting Young Marines to events and fund-raising. They are pas- sionate and dedicated parents and adults. Did I mention they are also part-time volunteers? Please keep that in mind when dealing with the Young Marines and any other vol- unteer in your community. It is a very huge commitment on their part. They all do the best they can with the resources and support they get. Because of the youth who have participated in this unit since Boot Camp Series 0601 they have won several national awards, including the Secretary of Defense 2009 Harley Bennett at 529- 1536 and Barbara Vandy- griff at 824-2531. • The Tehama County Transit Agency Board is seeking volunteer drivers to help provide transporta- tion to and from non emergency medical appointments. Mileage is Fulcrum Shield for youth drug demand reduction education, 2010 National Unit of the Year, two Jimmy Trimble Scholarships (2009 for Master Sergeant Annie Bennett and 2010 for 1st Sgt. Mary Hurton) which is awarded to only one male and one female nationally each year, plus numer- ous other regimental and division awards. Proclamations from the Cali- fornia Sheriffs Association and the State Assembly and Wally Herg- er‚s office have been made about their efforts in California and the war on drugs, alcohol, tobacco and bullying. The Board of Supervisors and City councils of Red Bluff and Corning have made similar proclamations. Several Young Marines have been special delegates at the Unit- ed Nations in New York and have been invited guests at the Military Order of World Wars at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Mary- land. The Fulcrum Shield was pre- sented to them at the Pentagon in Washington, D. C. Hip Hop Artist Brady Cud- more from Canada sung a song about the Tehama County Young VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT reimbursed. Your local youth in this unit is one of the most award winning and recognized Young Marine units in the fifty-two year history of the program which started in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1959. The Tehama County Young Marines name is forever etched in the minds of those leading the pro- gram in Washington, D. C. Yes, these kids have achieved a great deal for this community. It‚s their program; they run it, with the assistance of part-time volunteers. The actual name of this organi- zation is the "Young Marines of the Marine Corps League." The League began in 1923 as a frater- nal organization for Marines after WW I. Tehama County Young Marines are proud to claim Detachment 1140 of the Marine Corps League as their sponsors, along with Am Vets Post 2002, in Corning. Lastly let me please thank all those folks, agencies and busi- nesses in Tehama County for all the support, resources and love they have given to the youth all these years. I know it will contin- ue. I'm not leaving, just stepping aside. It was time for fresh ideas. It always is. This phrase sums up my feel- ings about the Young Marine pro- gram: "Everything I know about the Young Marines, I learned from the Young Marines and the dedi- cated and passionate part-time volunteers." Thanks for allowing me to experience mentoring with your children. P.J.'s Custom Upholstery
